Objectives and Strategy

For monitoring and evaluating the achievement of objectives, objectives and indicators were defined and the results of 2012 are presented in the following tables. Increasing the number of ADVID researchers and key partners Number 5 4 Participation in international research and development programs Number i. Regarding the negative change in the number of members, the reason is essentially related to a decrease in the number of individual members.

However, there was an increase in the value generated by quotas due to a significant increase in the number of collective members, as shown in graph I. With regard to other indicators, a deviation occurred due to the current situation and the lack of tenders for government funding for the Strategic Development Lines (anchor projects), which has an impact on the various planned activities. We choose not to take into account the indicators “More expenditure on R&D in the Cluster”, “Increase in RDD”.

In pursuit of the objectives of the Action Plan for the Douro Wine Cluster, ADVID held several events for knowledge transfer and its endogenization in the wine sector. The purpose of this workshop was to demonstrate the cultural and technical aspects of winemaking on the most important grape varieties in the region. Given the importance of the topic for the national wine economy and especially for the Douro region, the event was attended by the Minister of Agriculture, Sea, Environment and Spatial Affairs Dr.

Photo 12 - Opening of the session by the Minister of Agriculture, Marine, Environment and Spatial Planning, dr. This workshop presented a comparative analysis and balance of the main events at the beginning of the 2011/2012 crop year. The overall aim of this event was to expose the needs of the sector and put it at the center of research.

The purpose of this event was to raise awareness of either improving or maintaining the productive sustainability of agricultural systems and creating value through ecosystem services. The event was also attended by one of the leading experts in functional biodiversity, New Zealander Steve Wratten from the University of Lincoln. This event, which was part of the "Maximising Grapevine Ecosystem Services/Functional Biodiversity in Viticulture" project, was programmed to observe the Black Wheatear.

This workshop aimed to provide a comparative analysis of the main events from the 2011/2012 harvest year to flowering and rebirth. Standardize users of ADVID's proposed ripening analysis service for routine and phenolic ripening analysis;. Student Nathan Pigeon, who works on the project BIODIVINE - Demonstration of Biodiversity in the Viticulture Landscape (LIFE09 NAT/FR/000584), gave a presentation of the main results observed from monitoring the biodiversity of the grapevine ecosystem using traps placed on the estates of some associates.

Overall objective of the event: The general objective of this event was to reveal the needs of the sector and discuss. Colloquium: "Sustainability for the wine sector: What are the challenges?" Organized by IVV, IP and the National Commission of the International Organization of Grapevines and Wine (CNOIV). 34; Biodiversity of plants and arthropods in the key ecological structures of vineyards of the Alto Douro region". To promote these projects, several contacts were established with members, partners and entities of the technological system.

Support Service for Good Agricultural Practices

Services financed by shares

  • Technical Support for Integrated Vineyard Production
  • Support for application process preparation of agro-environmental measures
  • Grape moth control by mating disruption
  • Forecast potential vintage by pollen method
  • Evaluation of grape variety and rootstock behaviour

Invoiced services

  • Viticulture
    • Support for organic production
    • Evaluation of water potential for irrigation needs
  • Oenology
    • Maturation control
    • Portal of tannins (ADVID/AWRI)

To start up a support system for sustainable organic production in viticulture, in 2012 ADVID collected and processed information to support the activity and organization of contacts with companies that propose solutions for organic farming, organized workshops to raise awareness of this way of production and trained two technicians in this production method. To make a service available to members for managing vine water relations, by assessing the water potential before dawn, we have been monitoring the vine water status of the Upper Douro region. The overall goal was to create a database on the behavior of the main races of different sub-regions in the Douro.

In 2012, members who accepted this initiative were sent customized reports on their parcels containing the following routine analyses: weight (g); liquid volume (mL); potential alcohol (%); total acidity (mg/L tartaric acid) and pH and phenolic ripening: total anthocyanins, extracted anthocyanins, total polyphenols (IPT); extraction of anthocyanins - EA (%) and ripening of tannins - MP. In continuation of work in 2011 and taking into account the importance of tannins in oenology (which affect color persistence, aging of wine, oxidation and astringency), 514 samples were registered on the tannin portal from 3 out of 4 companies that registered in 2012. in 2012 generous amounts of wine were ordered to validate this method with these wines.

Administrative and accounting support

Institutional Relations

With the same aim, we organized a visit by German researchers from Geisenheim, Neustadt, Weinsberg and Veitshöchheim to the Douro region on March 22-24 to promote this meeting, as well as discussions between UTAD researchers and ADVID technicians. We continue to liaise with the Ministry of Agriculture through the Secretary of State for Rural Development, particularly to raise awareness of the issue of Flavescence dorée, culminating in a draft National Action Plan held by the Working Group formed for this purpose, with which ADVID is integrated. Regarding the UNESCO mission for the Douro world heritage, we were invited by the Minister of Agriculture and gave an opinion on the "Impact of the Foz Tua hydropower plant on wine production" as requested by the head of this mission.

We also held several meetings with the Office of the Secretary of State for Entrepreneurship, Competitiveness and Innovation, the aim of which was to reflect on the evaluation and development of centers and clusters from the point of view of the economic and social development of the country, in order to define a new framework for recognition in the next three years. The structure of the Douro mission participates in the advisory committee that decided on the preliminary report on the state of preservation of the heritage of the Alto Douro wine region and its importance in the context of protecting, safeguarding and promoting the ADV, as well as respecting Portugal's commitment to register the ADV on the World Heritage List. The Institute of Vine and Wine, invited to decide on the list of varieties suitable for wine production in Portugal, translated into Decree 380/2012, which is one of the fundamental conditions proposed by ADVID, with the inclusion of the reference code for every variety.

FEVIPOR - Winemakers Federation of Portugal, member of the board through which we have a seat on the advisory board of IVV. CNOIV – National Committee of the OIV, participation in various expert groups and the General Committee and national representation in the ad hoc Working Group "Carbon Balance" with the OIV.
