Workshop “Strategies for Weed Control in Organic Viticulture "
Date: 8 March Location: Régua
Invited speakers: Mr. José Raul Ribeiro (Agrobio), Mr. José Carlos Marques (Development Services for Organic Agriculture and Livestock Production of Madeira), Mr. Luis Seabra (Niepoort, Vinhos S.A) and Mr. Mateus Nicolau de Almeida (João Nicolau de Almeida & Filhos, Lda.).
We intended to discuss cultural practices, which may confer success in weed management and contribute to a good economic result when properly adapted.

“Climate Change in the Production of Wine. Overview and Assessment of the Situation in the Douro Region” Seminar
Date: 12 and 13 April
Location: Luso-American Foundation, Lisbon; Porto Customhouse, Porto.
Invited speakers: Dr. Greg Jones (SOU / ADVID), Prof. João Santos (UTAD - CITAB), Prof. Pedro Miranda (IDL - FCT UN Lisboa), Mr. Charles Symington (Symington, Vinhos S.A.) and George Sandeman (Sogrape Vinhos S.A.).
Given the importance of the topic to the national wine economy and particularly to the Douro Region, the event was attended by the Minister of Agriculture, Sea, Environment and Spatial Planning, Dr. Assunção Cristas, who opened the session in Lisbon.
This seminar presented the conclusions of the ADVID study about the impacts of climate change on viticulture, mainly providing details about observed and projected changes for wine regions worldwide and their impacts on grapevine growth, grape composition, wine production and quality. The opportunities and challenges related to climate change, especially for the Douro region, were also discussed.

Open Day at the University of Porto Date: 4 May
Location: Qta do Vallado and Qta S. Luiz (Sogevinus Fine Wines)
The general goal of this event was to expose the needs of the sector and make them into the focus of investigation.
The specific goals of the event were as follows:

“Wine Spoilage Yeast - Brettanomyces- Dekkera” Workshop Date: 9 May
Location: IVDP auditorium, Régua
Invited Speakers: Prof. Manuel Malfeito Ferreira (Botany Department, Biological Engineering of the Agronomy Institute), Dr. José António Couto (School of Biotechnology, Portuguese Catholic University), Dr. Margarida Souto-Carneiro (Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra) and Dr.

This workshop presented an analysis of Brettanomyces and Dekkera in wine, which are spoilage yeasts responsible for producing undesirable aromatic compounds, such as volatile phenols.

Nineteenth Annual Test of Vintage Wines (XIX prova anual dos vinhos da vindima) Date: 15, 18, 22 and 23 May
Location: School of Biotechnology, Portuguese Catholic University, Porto, Portugal

The first dates were reserved for "Douro" wine tasting and the following days were for "Generous" tastings with software to collect the data.
A total of 66 wines were tested, with 31 generous wines (from 10 different companies) and 35 wines suitable for Douro (from 9 different companies).
Biodiversity Week
Date: 28 - 31 May
Location: Demarcada do Douro Region
The purpose of this event was to raise awareness to either improve or maintain the productive sustainability of the agricultural systems and create value through ecosystem services.
Biodiversity week was comprised of a set of diverse activities, from bird watching to thematic workshops.

Location: Quinta das Carvalhas - Pinhão
Session Orientation: Paulo Travassos and Mário Santos - Laboratory of Applied Ecology (LEA/CITAB) at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), accompanied by viticulture technicians of the Real Companhia Velha and ADVID. The event was also attended by one of the leading experts on functional biodiversity, New Zealander Steve Wratten of the University of Lincoln.

This workshop came up after the first symposium on the theme from 2010 of "Biodiversity In Viticulture:
Creating Value Between Ecology And Economy/BIODIVERSIDADE EM VITICULTURA: CRIAÇÃO DE VALOR ENTRE ECOLOGIA E ECONOMIA". The goal was to show the results of several functional biodiversity actions related to viticulture and discuss them with the members.

The topic of this edition was "Thinking Out of the Bottle". Several talks were provided by the module organised by ADVID. The added value to wine by biodiversity was emphasised.
"Sustainability in Wine and Grapevine Production - Wine and Olive Oil Tastings” Field Trips
Date: 14-15 June Location: UTAD, Vila Real
ADVID, University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), the Centre for Agro-Environmental and Biological Research and Technology (CITAB), the Confederation of Farmers of Portugal (CAP), the
Association of Growers from Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (AOTAD) and the Regional Wine Commission of Trás-os-Montes (CVRTM) organised this event together.

This event was used to discuss the current socio-cultural, environmental and economic changes with a focus on the sustainability of wine and grapevine production. In this event, wine and oil tastings from different Portuguese labels were available.

• Define parameters of ripening evaluation;
• Standardise the users of the ripening analysis service proposed by ADVID for routine and phenolic ripeness analysis;

"The Biodivine Project" Promotion Date: 3 September

The MSc. Student Nathan Pigeon, who works on the BIODIVINE project - Demonstrating biodiversity in the viticulture landscape (LIFE09 NAT/FR/000584), made a presentation of the main results observed from monitoring grapevine ecosystem biodiversity by using traps placed on the properties of some associates.

General goal of the event: The general goal of this event was to expose the needs of the sector and discuss
them as possible subjects of investigation.
The specific objective was to talk with the University of Porto about ripening management, harvest and harvest logistics, quality transfer (grape-wine), winemaking mechanisms and environmental management.
"Installation of Hedges in the Viticulture Ecosystem" Workshop Date: 29 October
Location: Qta das Carvalhas, Pinhão.
Speakers: Ms. Cristina Carlos (ADVID), Prof. António Crespí (UTAD) and Mr. Nelson Lima (SERVIRURI) With respect to the different projects BIODIVINE - Demonstrating biodiversity in viticulture landscapes (LIFE +) and Maximising Vineyard Ecosystem Services (PRODER), this event was held to promote the installation of hedges in order to promote some ecosystem services as natural limitations of pests, soil protection and erosion control, reducing the drift effect of phytosanitary treatments, pollination, regulation of the water cycle and climate, carbon sequestration and cultural services such as recreational opportunities and leisure.

7.3.4. 2012 ADVID Award
IN 2012, the ADVID Prize honoured Bernardino Camilo Cincinnato da Costa, eminent Agronomist and Professor, who was named the Delegate of the Chamber of Agriculture to the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1900. This honour was considered to be the most important representation of Portugal.
The jury decided to award the “2012 ADVID award” to Mr. Cincinnato Costa for his study
"General phenological model to characterise the timing of flowering and veraison of Vitis vinifera L.”
as developed by A. K. Parker and C. Van Leeuwen, of ENITA, University of Bordeaux, and I. G. de Cortázar- Atauri and I. Chuine, of the Centre for Functional and Evolutionary Ecology in Montpellier.
