Integrated Programme for the Reduction of Maternal and Child Mortality

The Prime Minister announced on his Instagram account: "The Health for All program remains a symbol of the cooperative relations between Portugal and Sao Tome and Principe." One of the most important Portuguese cooperation programs is the partnership between Camões, I.P., the Ministry of Health of Portugal, the Ministry of Health of São Tomé and Príncipe and the IMVF.”

HEALTH FOR ALL

The project helped São Tomé and Príncipe's National Health System (NHS) to respond to existing and emerging needs in the health sector in terms of specialized care and telemedicine. Finally, it should be noted that on 19 December, as part of an official visit to São Tomé and Príncipe, the Portuguese Prime Minister, António Costa, visited the project together with the Minister of Defense, João Cravinho, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Francisco André.

SÃO TOMÉ AND PRÍNCIPE’S NATIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM STRENGTHENING (SPECIALITIES AND TELEMEDICINE) *

In a world committed to digital and remote assistance, especially in the context of the pandemic, this measure has encouraged a significant expansion of the equipment and infrastructure of the telemedicine service and upgraded it to meet the demands of the sector. Despite the restrictions due to COVID-19, the procurement and availability of drugs, reagents and clinical consumables for the provision of specialist care was ensured.

SÃO TOMÉ AND PRÍNCIPE

The São Tomé region's NHS capacity increase was achieved through the further training of São Tomé professionals during special missions, telemedicine sessions and distance learning platforms.

After reaching an agreement with MINSAP-GB, IMVF will continue its intervention, as a reference actor in the health care sector, with the implementation of a PIMI II transition project financed by the World Bank (Project for Strengthening the Health Services of Mothers and Children in Guinea-Bissau - PSMI). This nine-month intervention will provide a bridge to a new program funded by the European Union in Guinea Bissau's health sector in 2022 (PIMI III).

INTEGRATED PROGRAMME FOR THE REDUCTION

Throughout 2021, the pandemic context, together with a new cycle of political-administrative instability, further reinforced by long periods of strikes in the public administration (including in the health sector), increased the constraints and challenges for IMVF action within the framework of PIMI II. The implementation of PIMI III, based on previous experiences, will strengthen partnership investments in a perspective of ownership and gradual transfer of skills to MINSAP-GB and other national health structures.

OF MATERNAL AND CHILD MORTALITY: STRENGTHENING

Despite this fact, and thanks to a clinical, logistical and administrative team of more than 85 professional contributions, Cuban, Portuguese and national citizens (the majority), the institute maintained its intervention in terms of clinical training, supply of medicine and distribution and installation of medical-surgical equipment in 132 health structures throughout the country.
