1 Introduction

Nowadays, the use of digital cameras and LIDARs on board of mobile robots is very common, providing a digital visual/depth representation of the surrounding world for the robots that base their artificial intelligence on the interaction with the environment.

Moreover, these sensors can also be used to share the information about the environ- ment where the robot is being used to a remote entity, mainly nowadays with the available network capabilities.

However, the limitations of mobile robots that operates autonomously in terms of power autonomy, computational power and available bandwidth in the connection with the world creates a challenge to the existent video coding algorithms to be used in real- time as a solution to transmit visual data between the robot and a remote station.

2 Objectives

The aim of this PhD is to develop time-constrained image/video/data coding algorithms to be used in autonomous mobile robots for remote sensing. In this PhD we will address the limitations of the current image/video/data coding methods in the context of remote sensing taking into considerations the hardware constraints, power limitation and reserved bandwidth of the robotic platform where the algorithms have to be implemented. In order to overcome these limitations, novel algorithms which go well beyond the currently developed techniques and standards are needed.

The University of Aveiro is currently executing several robotic projects where the algorithms can be tested and where the remote access of the visual information captured by the cameras on board of the robots are an important challenge.
