As an important aspect of public health promotion, the promotion of breastfeeding also aims to give socially disadvantaged children a good start in life. The establishment of the Foundation firmly integrated the protection and promotion of breastfeeding in Switzerland into existing national institutions. As part of the initiative, the 'Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding' have been developed as guidelines for breastfeeding.

On behalf of the Swiss Committee for UNICEF (hereinafter "UNICEF Switzerland"), the Swiss Foundation for the Promotion of Breastfeeding is responsible for the planning and implementation of the quality assurance of UNICEF BFHI certifications. The Foundation for the Promotion of Breastfeeding organized an event in connection with the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, which took place at the Krebsliga Schweiz (Swiss Cancer League) premises on 25 June 2007. The history of BFHI was presented by Elsbeth Müller (Executive Director of UNICEF Switzerland).

MPH Julia Dratva (assistant physician at the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Basel) highlighted the achievements of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative in Switzerland. The results of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative quality assessment study, conducted by the Foundation on behalf of UNICEF in 2005, were presented by Ms Cornelia Furrer (Project Leader, Interface). The report on monitoring breastfeeding practices can be obtained from the secretary of the Swiss Foundation for the Promotion of Breastfeeding.

This represents a major achievement in the history of the Codex Committee after many years of hard work.

For this purpose, the Swiss infant formula manufacturers, in cooperation with the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health, the Swiss Pediatric Association and the FMH Swiss Medical Association, have adopted the voluntary national Verhaltenskodex der Hersteller von Muttermilch-Ersatzpräparaten (hereinafter "Producers' Code of Marketing Infant formula') in 1982. The obligation of manufacturers to apply the principles of the Code to downstream marketing agencies, e.g. every advertisement must state that breast milk is the best food for infants.

Outlook for the Future

Goal 1Breastfeeding is a humanitarian issue and a fundamental right, and is therefore regarded as a fundamental right of the child. This attitude is also reflected in the implementation of the Labor Act and the income replacement scheme. Goal 3 By the end of 2008, 95 percent of pregnant women and 80 percent of future fathers will be aware of the benefits of breastfeeding and the ideal duration of breastfeeding.

40 percent of all babies born in Switzerland are exclusively breastfed for at least six months. Target 495 percent of breastfeeding mothers know who to turn to in case of breastfeeding difficulties and appropriate counseling centers are established. Target 5 By the end of 2008, 70 percent of babies are born in baby-friendly maternity hospitals and 50 percent of Swiss maternity hospitals are certified as baby-friendly.

Objective 6 Healthcare workers in clinics and hospitals who care for pregnant women and nursing mothers (in particular labor and delivery ward staff, nursing staff, doctors, midwives, lactation consultants, nurses specializing in maternal counseling, nutritional consultants, physician assistants , qualified staff in pharmacies and drugstores) as well as professionals from insurance companies and medical call centers know the advantages of breastfeeding and the ideal duration of lactation and are aware of the importance of quality breastfeeding management. Objective 7. The marketing of infant formulas and other products that could have a negative impact on breastfeeding and the duration of lactation is monitored and corrected if necessary. Objective 8 The Foundation evaluates its organizational structures and provides resources for the optimal promotion of breastfeeding at the national level.

Optimizing hospital certification and training of BFHI assessors will be one of the main tasks for 2008. The brochure "Breastfeeding - a gift for life" will be updated and reprinted in a new, more modern plan in cooperation. with the Swiss Health Promotion. The brochure will be translated into four additional languages, making it available in a total of ten languages: Albanian, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Serbo-Croatian, Spanish, Tamil and Turkish.

Materials to be used in local campaigns during World Breastfeeding Week 2008 need to be re-organised, including a press release. In 2008, the medium-term goals must be evaluated, and new goals must be drawn up for the period up to 2013 as a basis for further activities. In addition to securing the foundation's financial future, new premises must also be found during 2008.
