Faculdade de Medicina de São José do Rio Preto Burnout in sports is primarily considered to be a response to chronic stress characterized by performance decreases, sport devaluation, and physical and emotional exhaustion. In turn, these researchers have proposed that the negative experiences of these athletes are similar to the burnout in other professions. Although burnout syndrome may limit the development of an athlete's career, few studies have addressed burnout syndrome in soccer. The objective of this study was to identify and compare the burnout reference values between professional and amateur soccer players according to playing position during practice. This study included 134 male soccer players: 71 professional players
(age=22.77±3.98 years) comprising three teams in
competition for the Paulista Championship (Campeonato Paulista; Series A-1 and A-2) and 63 amateur players (age=17.18±0.84 years) in competition for the Sao Paulo Cup of Junior Soccer (Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior). The São Paulo State Football Federation (Federação Paulista de Futebol) organized these tournaments in São Paulo, Brazil. The Portuguese version of the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ) Questionário de Burnout para Atletas, an instrument developed to assess burnout in athletes, was used to assess burnout syndrome. This questionnaire is composed of 15 items and three subscales that evaluate the frequency of feelings related to burnout: physical and emotional exhaustion; reduced sense of accomplishment and sport devaluation. A Student's t-test did not indicate significant between-group mean differences (P<0.05) on any subscale. The highest scores were obtained for the reduced sense of accomplishment (RSA) subscale: 2.08 for professionals and 2.07 for amateurs. The lowest mean values were obtained for sport devaluation (SD): 1.70 for professionals and 1.77 for amateur players. There were no significant differences (P<0.05) between the means of the two athlete categories with regard to the burnout subscales. Professional goalkeepers and forwards and amateur defenders had the highest average total burnout scores. These scores were associated with physical and emotional exhaustion. In conclusion, there were no significant differences between professional and amateur players' scores on the three burnout subscales with regard to playing position. The hypothesis that amateur and less experienced athletes are more likely to experience burnout compared with professional athletes was not supported (i.e., burnout symptoms were not associated with soccer experience).
