Beach Party Happy Hour

At the end of our week-long staycation, we celebrated with a Beach Party Happy Hour. Roger Burns provided the music and everyone wore their Hawaiian shirts and flip-flops.

The kitchen

provided Pineapple

and Chicken Teriyaki skewers, fresh pineapple and fruit. We also enjoyed a homemade punch, with pineapple juice and raspberry sherbet. Everyone had a great time dancing, visiting and we even had a special appearance by the shark. That shark can really bust a move out on the dance floor.

Staycation

A Staycation is a vacation that you take, but don’t go anywhere. So our Staycation at the Rio Grande was a week at the beach, in the middle of the desert! All week, the activities and games were geared toward beach themes.

Prize Bingo had prizes like sunglasses, kitchen towels and napkins with pineapples on them, and beach bags with palm trees. We also had Sacha come and we made greeting cards with beach ideas. For

our craft that week, we made refrigerator

magnets with sand, buckets, flip-flops and beach chairs. We also made flip-flop wreaths to hang on the residents’ doors.

They turned out really cute, and if you messed them up, you could just wear them. And to top off the week long staycation, we had a visit from a friendly shark. Do not go in the water!

For our Happy Hour, Roger Burns played Beach Boys and surfer music. And the shark liked to boogie down as well.

It was a great week and really, who would have thought you could have such a good time at the beach in the middle of the desert?

Our Shark really likes to boogie

on down!

Did you need a little sunscreen on

that shiny spot?

Hey Phyllis, how about a hug?

Bud says Life is a Beach. The Roberts enjoy a day at the beach.

Please don’t feed the animals.

An Abundance of Apples

Eaten as a snack or in a homemade dessert, apples are a favorite fruit, especially in autumn. You’re sure to fall for one of these common varieties:

Gala — Small and sweet, Gala apples are ideal for snacking, and that makes them the top pick among consumers and the most- grown apple in America. Galas can be creamy yellow to red, and are often striped.

Red Delicious — Until recent years, the Red Delicious was the country’s most popular apple.

This variety is known for its crimson skin and mild flavor.

Granny Smith — Bright green and tart, Granny Smith apples are prized for their versatility.

They’re often featured in pies and baked goods.

Fuji — Developed in Japan and named after Mount Fuji, this very sweet apple is firm and crisp. Its skin is similar to the Gala.

Honeycrisp — The name of this apple says it all — it’s sweet, juicy and crispy, perfect for eating raw.

Honeycrisps are also good baked or cooked in both sweet and savory recipes.

Braeburn — Bite into a Braeburn, and you’ll taste the subtle spices of cinnamon and nutmeg in addition to the classic apple flavor. This variety’s colors range from yellow to orange to deep red.

Flip-Flop Door Wreath

Summertime Arts and Crafts

The ladies got together for a fun Arts and Crafts activity, flip-flop door wreaths. When I told them what we were going to be making, they looked at me like I had lost it.

But when I showed them how cute the one I had made earlier turned out, everyone decided they wanted one for their door.

We had a box of flip-flops in one of the storage cabinets that had been used for a marketing prop, and I found silk flowers in a different cabinet. As you probably have seen around the building, the results were awesome.

Card Making with Sacha

We had a great time making greeting cards with Sacha. She stayed with our beach theme. She brought cut-outs of palm trees and pineapples for us to make three different greeting cards. We all had a great time, and she is coming back in a couple of months. You don’t even have to be creative, she gives you samples and great ideas.

We look forward to having Sacha back next month. Everyone likes getting cards and when they find out you made them, they are extra special. Thanks, Sacha.

Hula to Stay Fit

We used Hula Hoops to exercise with during our Beach Week. It was a lot of fun.

Some people had not done Hula Hoops in forever, and some had never done them.

But everyone was a really good sport and tried.

Even the whole family tried. The family that Hula Hoops together, stays together, or something like that. Thanks, guys, for making Beach Week such a great success.

We all had fun.

Back to School

You can tell when you go to the store and every aisle has school supplies, that summer is almost over. The kids here in Rio Rancho started back to school on August 12th. The residents helped out with a school supply drive in conjunction with KOAT-TV Channel 7. We collected school supplies for families in the Rio Rancho and Albuquerque school districts who are low-income families that need a little extra help supplying their kids with things they need to start school. We took several loads to the local Walmart, where they had a collection box. We had a school supply list that we worked from, and tried to get most of the things listed. Thanks to all who contributed to this very worthy cause. It’s hard enough starting back to school for some of these kids, but it’s much easier when they are equipped with a new backpack and the correct supplies. We are setting them up to succeed. Have a great school year, kids!

Lectures and

Presentations For Our Minds and Bodies

We had a guest speaker, Dr. Lena Ernst, come and do a presentation on Dementia and the stages of Dementia. She did a great presentation to a packed house. She had handouts that explained some of the things you can do to help reduce your risks of getting Dementia and if you do develop it, how to slow the progression down.

Things to avoid are smoking, drinking in excess, not challenging your mind and not getting enough sleep, just to name a few. We need to eat green, leafy vegetables and fruit, and get enough of the right vitamins. We will be continuing with our Dementia lectures in September. We also have a group coming to talk about Diabetes as you age.

Both of these lecture series are very informative and we are grateful to have them come and do these presentations.

We also had someone from Med-Care do a presentation on the new laws and regulations going into effect with Medicare and Medicaid.

The residents had a lot of questions, and Jeff was very informative. The residents did want him to return after October for the latest updates.

We also had a presentation by Encompass Health about keeping hydrated and how easy it is to become dehydrated in the summertime.

We do not drink enough water, and we should drink even more in the summertime when it is so warm. Here is the formula for figuring how much water you should drink per day. Take your body weight, divide that by 2, and that is how many ounces of water you should be drinking a day.

That really seems like a lot of water, but we need water to keep our bodies going. So, drink an 8 oz. glass of water first thing in the morning and another one when you get ready for bed.
