Text 2 – All the things I have to do
My name is David, and I'm going to tell you a bit about my life. I have to get up at about quarter past seven on school days. I usually have toast for breakfast. I have to make it myself, because Mum has to look after my little sister, Jane. I have to feed the cat before I go to school, too. I leave the house at half past eight, and I go by tram to school. School starts at ten to nine. When I get home from school I play computer games for about an hour, then I start my homework. After dinner I have to help with the washing up, and then I finish my homework. I go to bed at about quarter to ten. On Friday evenings I usually go to the cinema with my friends, but I always get home by half past nine. I don't mind not staying out late, because I play table tennis for my team on Saturdays mornings, so I have to get up early.

Presente do Indicativo (Simple Present or Present Simple)
- FORMA AFIRMATIVA
Com os Pronomes Pessoais I, You, We e They, o Presente Simples se forma com o verbo no infinitvo sem TO. Já com os Pronomes Pessoais He, She e It, o Presente Simples é formado com o verbo no infinitivo sem TO e ao verbo é acrescentado a letra -s no fim. Observe a tabela abaixo:
I work You work He works She works It works We work You work They work - USOS
O Simple Present é usado para expressar: 1. Fatos e situações atuais:
Anthony lives in New York. (Antônio mora em Nova Iorque.)
My wife works in a hospital as a nurse. Classes start at 8:00 a.m. (As aulas começam às oito da manhã.)
Banks open at 10:00 a.m. (Os bancos abrem às dez da manhã.)
2. Hábitos: Geralmente são empregados com advérbios de tempo como: always, often, usually, rarely, frequently, sometimes, never, every day, on weekends, on Tuesdays, etc.
I go to the gym every day. (Vou à academia todos os dias.) She never watches tv. (Ela nunca assiste tv.)
He usually leaves the job at 6:00 p.m.
It usually snows here in January. (Geralmente neva aqui em Janeiro.) They never go to the beach. (Eles nunca vão à praia.)
3. Verdades Universais:
The sun goes down in the west. (O sol se põe no oeste.) Birds fly. (Pássaros voam.)
The earth revolves around the sun. (A terra gira ao redor do sol.) Dogs bark. (Cachorros latem.)

My flight leaves at 9:00 p.m. (Meu vôo sai às nove da noite.) My parents arrive tonight. (Meus pais chegam esta noite.)
I start to work next week (Eu começo a trabalhar na próxima semana).
We go on weekends to the swimming pool. ERRADO She listens always to the radio. ERRADO
We go to the swimming pool on weekends. CERTO She always listens to the radio. CERTO
... at that moment the woman enters the saloon and starts to talk ... ( ... naquele momento a mulher entra na sala e começa a falar ...)
6. Opiniões, sentimentos, desejos, preferências e gostos: She likes vegetables. (Ela gosta de vegetais.)
I think you are right. (Acho que você está certo.) I hope so. (Espero que sim.)
7. O Simple Present é empregado também em orações condicionais com o uso de if (se), e em orações temporais, introduzidas por when, as soon as, before, after, until.
If it rains, I won't go to the beach. (Se chover, não irei para praia.)
I'll be very happy if you come to dinner with us.
When you come to my house, I'll show you the pictures. (Quando você vier à minha casa, vou lhe mostrar as fotos.)
Please, ask him to call me as soon as he arrives. - FORMAÇÃO DO PRESENTE (SIMPLE PRESENT)
1. Na conjugação de alguns verbos, basta acrescentar a letra -s à 3ª pessoa do singular (He, She, It) para formar o Presente Simples. Os outros pronomes, I, You, We e They formam a conjugação do Presente Simples com o verbo no infinitvo sem TO e não recebem a letra -s ao final do verbo, como consta na tabela
anteriormente apresentada. Veja alguns exemplos: She sings in a choir. (Ela canta num coral.)
He loves her. (Ele a ama.)
This washing machine works well. (Esta máquina de lavar funciona bem.) They work in a factory.
(Eles trabalham em uma fábrica.) We study at Oxford University.
Nobody likes you. (Ninguém gosta de você.)
Everything ends up some day. (Tudo acaba um dia.) Nothing interests me. (Nada me interessa.)
2. Com os verbos terminados em -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, -z e -o, acrescenta-se -es a eles para formar o Presente Simples com a terceira pessoa do singular (He, She, It):
- Wash: She washes her hair every day. (Ela lava o cabelo todos os dias.)
- Kiss: The father kisses his children when they wake up. - Go: He goes to the park on weekends.
- Watch: He watches all sitcoms which are broadcast on television.
- Buzz: Bee buzzes among the flowers. - Fix: It fixes the shelf to the wall. (Isso fixa a prateleira na parede.)
- Do: Susan does her homework regularly. (Susan faz sua lição de casa regularmente.)
3. Se os verbos terminarem em -y precedido de consoante, troca-se o -y por -i e acrescenta-se -es a eles para formar o Presente Simples com a terceira pessoa do singular (He, She, It):
- Try: She tries to do a good work as a Vet. - Fly: The little bird flies so high. (O pequeno pássaro voa tão alto.)
- Study: He studies engineering. (Ele estuda engenharia.)
- Cry: She cries when she sees poor child in the streets. Para a 3ª pessoa do singular (He, She, It), o verbo to have possui a forma has:
He has lots of friends. (Ele tem muitos amigos.) She has brown hair. (Ela tem cabelo castanho.) - FORMA NEGATIVA E INTERROGATIVA:
As formas negativas e interrogativas do Simple Present são feitas com o verbo auxiliar Do (do/does), acompanhado do verbo principal no infinitivo sem to.
1. Forma Negativa:
Para formar uma oração negativa no Simple Present, usa-se do not para os Pronomes Pessoais I, You, We, You e They e does not para a 3ª pessoa do singular (He, She, It). Observe a tabela abaixo:
Forma contraída
I do not work I don't work.
You do not work You don't work. He does not work He doesn't work. She does not work She doesn't work. It does not work It doesn't work.
We do not work We don't work.
You do not work You don't work. They do not work They don't work. 2. Forma Interrogativa:
Para formar uma oração interrogativa no Simple Present, usa-se o verbo auxiliar Do ANTES DO SUJEITO para os Pronomes Pessoais I, You, We, You e They e does para a 3ª pessoa do singular (He, She, It). Observe os exemplos abaixo:
Do I need it? (Eu preciso disto?)
Do you have a summerhouse? (Você tem casa na praia?) What do toads eat? (O que os sapos comem?)
How do you know she is married? (Como você sabe que ela é casada?) Where does he work? (Onde ele trabalha?)
Does it work? (Isto funciona?)
Do we know her? (Nós a conhecemos?) Do you have a car? (Vocês têm carro?)
Do they go out on weekends? (Eles saem nos finais de semana?) 3. Forma Interrogativo-Negativa:
Para formar uma oração interrogativo-negativa no Simple Present, usa-se do ou does antes do sujeito e coloca-se not após o sujeito. Veja:
Do I not need it? (= Don't I need it?) (Eu não preciso disto?)
Why do you not take a day off tomorrow? (= Why don't you take a day off tomorrow?)
Does she not like rice and bean? (= Doesn't she like rice and bean?) (Ela não gosta de arroz e feijão?) Does he not understand? (= Doesn't he understand?) (Ele não entende?)
Does it not work? (Doesn't it work?) (Isto não funciona?)
Why do we not go to the beach? (= Why don't we go to the beach?) (Por que não vamos à praia?) Do you not have a dog? (= Don't you have a dog?) (Você não tem cachorro?)
Do they not speak English? (= Don't they speak English?) (Eles não falam Inglês?) OBSERVAÇÕES:
neutro it é empregado. Por exemplo:
My hair dryer works well. (Meu secador de cabelo funciona bem.)
He does believe in God. (Ele acredita em Deus, sim.)
3. Na forma Interrogativo-Negativa, os verbos have e be também posicionam-se antes do sujeito, assim como o auxiliar do / does. Por exemplo:
Are you not ready? (= Aren't you ready?) (Você não está pronto?)
Is Susan not at home? (= Isn't Susan at home?) (Susan não está em casa?)
Is the answer not obvious? (= Isn't the answer obvious?) (A resposta não é óbvia?) EXERCISES:
