2. Resumo dos Trabalhos Desenvolvidos
Descreva de forma breve as actividades desenvolvidas no período em apreço e os resultados
alcançados. Referia-se em concreto às tarefas que tiveram execução no período a que o relatório
respeita.
The team has worked on all tasks, but efforts were mainly focused on tasks 1 and 3 to 6.
Data collection was pursued in 20 regions of Portugal (18 in the continent and 2 in Azores) and 8
regions in Brazil. The analysis of sections of these data was presented at the 1st Workshop of the
InAPoP Project - http://www.fl.ul.pt/laboratoriofonetica/InAPoP/workshop.html) and 2 conferences,
published in 3 book chapters, and submitted for international conferences. Prosodic comparisons
between European Portuguese (EP) and Brazilian Portuguese (BP), and with other Romance
languages (mainly Spanish, Catalan, and Italian) were developed (studies accepted as book chapters
to be published by the OUP).
The Interactive Atlas web platform (http://www.fl.ul.pt/LaboratorioFonetica/InAPoP/), available online
since December 2012, has been improved and updated (with data for nuclear contours, tonal density
and phrasing).
The first workshop of the Project was organized within an international conference held at the
University of Lisbon. A PhD thesis (on prosodic variation in EP: intonation, phrasing and rhythm) was
concluded and another (focusing on intonational variation in BP) is in progress. A MA thesis (on
prosodic phrasing across EP varieties) is also in progress.
A summary of the activities developed by task follows.
1. Data collection, file editing and labeling
Data collection in Portugal according to geographical distribution is almost finished. Only the points
from Madeira, plus 5 urban and 11 rural points in the continent are still missing due to schedule
restrictions of the subject pool and local supporting institutions (Figures 1-3).
In Brazil, 5 new data points along the Atlantic coast were added to the initial plan of 7 points: Ceará,
Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Sergipe e Paraná. Data collection is now completed for 8 data
points - Figure 4). File editing and labeling of the collected materials is almost completed.
2. Interactive web platform
The web platform was constantly updated (geographical points covered, local supporting institutions,
main results obtained, examples, resources). The examples available online constitute a preliminary
version of the subset of training materials to be available on the platform.
The database feeding the research engine of the platform was updated with results on intonational
nuclear contours, prosodic phrasing and tonal density across EP and BP varieties. The visual display
allows the online production of prosodic variation maps by request of the user. The research engine
was tested to allow the mapping of rhythmic properties. Besides the collaborative efforts with
Geography, a training session on the software is planned for a team member from the area of
Prosody, to maximize efficiency and productivity.
3. Variation in prosodic structure
The investigation of prosodic structure and phrasing preferences started by looking at intonational
phrasing across EP varieties. The role of branchingness and length on phrasing choices was explored,
leading to the publication of a book chapter. The analysis of phrasing preferences across BP varieties
is in progress. Research on prosodically constrained segmental phenomena was presented at 2
conferences. A MA thesis is being developed.
4. Variation in rhythm and the realization of stress
The speech materials of the sub-corpus for the analysis of rhythm were prepared for prosodic
analysis. Rhythmic properties of EP were explored across 5 regions and compared with other
(non-)Romance languages. These preliminary results were presented at 2 conferences and were used in
order to test the research engine that generates the mapping of variation. The investigation of the
most adequate mapping method to represent rhythmic variation across Portuguese led to a
submission to an international conference.
5. Variation in intonation
This was the most developed task within the project: the intonation of sentence types and
semantic-pragmatic distinctions across varieties of Portuguese was systematically analyzed in EP and BP. Pitch
accent distribution
was also observed both in EP and BP. Tonal density was analyzed by sentence type (statements,
yes-no questions, wh- questions). The major findings are reported in the Atlas web platform, both in
a static (cf. the ‘Results’ menu) and in an interactive manner (by the online production of maps
depending on the search defined by the user). This research was described in 2 accepted book
chapters, and led to a submission for an international conference.
6. Portuguese within Romance
The book ‘Intonation in Romance’ accepted by Oxford University Press, which includes contributions
from several project team members working on different languages/varieties in comparable ways, is
currently in press.
The contribution of the Portuguese team to the Interactive Atlas of Romance Intonation is almost
concluded (the online materials are currently being revised).
