Christmas Greetings!
With our Mass celebrations on Thursday and Friday, Christmas has just begun! Today within the Octave of Christmas we cele-brate the Feast of The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, a wonderful time to celebrate family and ask the Lord’s special blessings upon all families and our parish family also. I hope all of you had a wonderful and blessed Christmas. It certainly is a hectic time of year and yet how nice it is to finally get to the destination where we will be for Christmas day and enjoy time with family and friends.
The Christmas collection is so very important for the retired priest benefits and clergy trust fund. Thank you to all who gave to this important collection this past week. It is necessary to realize that this collection is used for the Priest retirement fund, as well as priests on leave and is very important for that specific purpose. I pray that at each collection there will be a much needed increase at Easter and in the future, especially as I approach that magic time of retirement, unfortunately not for another thirteen years at age 75.
I would like to express my sincere thanks for the gifts and good wishes given at Christmas. In a special way I’d also like to thank the many people who made our celebrations special in many ways: Thanks to Fr. Cristiano, Deacon Bruno Nobre, S.J., and Fr. Ray Kiley; to Mariazinha Sousa who organized the children for the 5:30 p.m. Mass pageant along with many parents, catechists and volunteers; Dorothy Chaves at the other Masses; Mariazinha Sousa, Liz Carreiro, Cinira Vicente, Iberia Frias, Alda Ferreira, Maria Rodrigues, Alberto Melo, Manuel Silva, João Teixeira, Higor Fontoura, and all who visually en-hanced our worship space along with all those who helped clean; thanks to Luis Travassos, Dorothy, Philip & Ja-cob Chaves and the choir members in both languages; the sacristans, the many Lectors, Ministers of Holy Com-munion, Altar Servers, and Ushers. To all, a most sincere and heartfelt thanks! And to you, the parishioners, who enhance the liturgies by your presence: may the Lord abundantly bless you in the New Year with his goodness!
Friday, January 1st is the Solemnity of Mary, The Mother of God. This year it is a Holy Day of Obligation and a great way to begin the New Year. The Mass schedule for the Holy Day is as follows:
New Year’s Eve (Thurs., December 31st): 5:30 p.m. Mass (Bilingual)
New Year’s Day (Friday, January 1st): 9:45 a.m. Mass in English
11:30am Mass in Portuguese with the singing of the Te Deum 7:00pm Mass in Portuguese with the Brazilian Community
May the Lord’s Grace, Blessings and Peace be yours during the coming year! Peace,
Paz,
Paróquia Santo António Cambridge, MA

The Pope’s Suggested Works of Mercy
Pope Francis has called on Catholics to “rediscover” the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy
during this Year of Mercy so that we can enter more deeply into the heart of the Gospel and
live as true disciples of Jesus. This monthly list suggests some simple ways to live out each of
these Works of Mercy in solidarity with the Holy Father’s prayer intentions for the month.
Spiritual Works of Mercy
• Counsel the Doubtful • Instruct the Ignorant • Admonish Sinners • Comfort the Afflicted • Forgive Offences
• Bear Patiently Those Who Do Us Ill • Pray for the Living and the Dead
Corporal Works of Mercy
• Feed the Hungry
• Give Drink to the Thirsty • Clothe the Naked
• Welcome the Stranger • Heal the Sick
• Visit the Imprisoned • Bury the Dead

Feast of the Holy Family (Cycle C)
Why did Jesus choose to become a baby born of a mother and father and to spend all but His last years living in an ordinary human family? In part, to reveal God's plan to make all people live as one "holy fami-ly" in His Church (see 2 Corinthians 6:16-18). In the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, God reveals our true home. We're to live as His children, "chosen ones, holy and beloved," as the First Reading puts it.
The family advice we hear in today's readings - for mothers, fathers and children - is all solid and practi-cal. Happy homes are the fruit of our faithfulness to the Lord, we sing in today's Psalm. But the Liturgy is inviting us to see more, to see how, through our fami-ly obligations and relationships, our families become heralds of the family of God that He wants to create on earth. Jesus shows us this in today's Gospel. His obedience to His earthly parents flows directly from His obedience to the will of His heavenly Father. Jo-seph and Mary aren't identified by name, but three times are called "his parents" and are referred to sepa-rately as his "mother" and "father." The emphasis is all on their "familial" ties to Jesus. But these ties are emphasized only so that Jesus, in the first words He speaks in Luke's Gospel, can point us beyond that earthly relationship to the Fatherhood of God. In what Jesus calls "My Father's house," every family finds its true meaning and purpose (see Ephesians 3:15). The Temple we read about in the Gospel today is God's house, His dwelling (see Luke 19:46). But it's also an image of the family of God, the Church (see Ephesians 2:19-22; Hebrews 3:3-6; 10:21). In our families we're to build up this household, this family, this living temple of God. Until He reveals His new dwelling among us, and says of every person: "I shall be his God and he will be My son" (see Revelation 21:3,7).
