μ+μ−, andthe π+π− massspectrum indicating a large f0(980) component[1],thischannelhasbeenregardedwithgreatinterest inheavy-flavor physics.Moredetailedstudiesofthe π+π−mass spectrumhaveshownthe π+π− systemto bealmostentirelyCP odd[2,3]. Thisopensup thepossibilityofdirectly measuringthe lifetimeoftheCP-oddpartoftheB0s meson[4,5].Inaddition,the B0

s→J/ψπ+π− decayhasbeenusedforthemeasurementofthe CP-violating phase φs [6,7], making an important contributionto

the world-average value of φs [8–13]. The phase φs is predicted

tobe smallinthe standardmodel[14],making itsdetermination interesting becauseof thelarge enhancements that can be intro-ducedbynewphysics[15,16].Inwhatfollows,wewillrefertothe f0(980)asf0 andtheφ (1020)asφ.

ThisLetterpresentsthemeasurementoftheratio Rf0 ofthe

whichisconsistentwithresultsfromseveralexperiments[2,4,18, 19]. Detailed studies of the π+π− mass spectrum of the B0

2. TheCMSdetector

ThecentralfeatureoftheCMSapparatusisasuperconducting solenoid of 6 m internal diameter. Within the 3.8 T field vol-umeare asilicon pixelandstrip tracker, alead tungstatecrystal electromagnetic calorimeter, and a brass and scintillator hadron calorimeter, each composed ofa barrelandtwo endcapsections. Muonsaremeasuredinthepseudorapidityrange|η|<2.4 in gas-ionization detectors embedded in the steelflux-return yoke out-sidethe solenoid, which aremadeusingthree technologies:drift tubes, cathode strip chambers, and resistive-plate chambers. Ex-tensive forward calorimetry complements the coverage provided bythebarrelandendcapdetectors.Themainsubdetectorsusedin thisanalysisarethesilicontrackerandthemuonsystems.

Thesilicontrackermeasureschargedparticleswithinthe pseu-dorapidity range|η|<2.5 and consistsof 1440silicon pixel and 15 148silicon strip detectormodules. Matching muons to tracks measuredinthesilicontrackerresultsinarelativetransverse mo-mentumresolutionformuonswith20<pT<100 GeV of1.3–2.0% inthe barrel and better than 6% in the endcaps. The pT resolu-tion in the barrel is better than 10% for muons with pT up to 1 TeV[20].

ThefirstleveloftheCMStriggersystem, composedofcustom hardware processors, uses informationfrom thecalorimeters and muon detectors to select the most interesting events in a fixed timeintervaloflessthan4 μs.Thehigh-leveltrigger(HLT) proces-sorfarmfurtherdecreasestheeventratetolessthan1 kHz,before datastorage.

3. Eventselection

The data sample used for this measurement was collected in 2011by the CMSexperimentat the CERNLHC in proton–proton collisionsatacentre-of-massenergyof7 TeVandcorrespondsto anintegratedluminosityof5.3 fb−1.

The search for B0s →Jf0 decays is performed in events withtwo muon candidatesselectedby thedimuon triggeratthe HLT, requiring the muon pair to originate froma displaced ver-tex.The dimuon candidates are further required to complywith Lxy/σxy>3,where Lxy isthemagnitudeofthevector Lxy,which

liesinaplanetransversetothebeamaxisandpointsfromthe in-teraction point to the dimuon vertex, and σxy is its uncertainty;

cosαJ >0.9, where αJ is the angle between the direction

of the dimuon transverse momentum and Lxy; pT>4 GeV and

|η|<2.2 for each muon candidate; pT>7 GeV for the dimuon; thedistanceofclosestapproach ofeach muontrackwithrespect totheothermuontrack<0.5 cm.

ReconstructionoftheB0

s→Jf0decaysbeginswiththesearch forJcandidatesbycombiningtwomuonsofoppositechargeto formavertexwitha fitprobability >0.5% andaninvariant mass (MJ) within |MJ−3097.6 MeV|<150 MeV. To search for f0 candidates, twotracksofoppositechargeassumedtobepionsare constrainedtoavertexwithaprobability>5%.Onepioncandidate must have pT>1 GeV and the other pT>2.5 GeV. In addition, the f0 candidate must have pT>3.5 GeV and Mf0 in the range

|Mf0−974 MeV|<50 MeV.The974 MeVisthemeasuredmassof

f0 signal in datamodeled by a Breit–Wigner function. This value isconsistent withthe f0 massfromthe Particle Data Group [22] andthe LHCb measurement [1]. Finally, a vertexis formed with the J and f0 candidates, constraining thedimuon mass to the nominalJ mass [22]. The Bs0→Jf0 candidates are required tohavea vertexprobability >10%, pT>13 GeV, cosαB0

s >0.994,

4. Results

The signal yields of both decay channels are extracted using unbinned maximum-likelihoodfits ofthe massdistributions. The invariant mass distribution of the J/ψ(μ+μ)f0+π) candi-dates isshownin Fig. 1.It isfit witha superpositionofa Gaus-sian function representing the signal, a polynomial function to account for the combinatorial background, andanother Gaussian function for any possible peaking background. The latter mod-els resonant structures that could appear in the left sideband of the J/ψ(μ+μ)f0+π) signal mass owing to the misidentifi-cation of a kaon as a pion coming from decays such as B0 JK∗(892)(K+π)andB0s→JK+K−,asexamples.Inaddition, B+→JK++) decays can be a source of background when combined with an extra background pion candidate. When al-lowing all parameters to float, the fit returns Nf0

obs=873±49 events anda B0

s mass of 5369.1±0.9 MeV, witha resolution of 15.9±0.9 MeV, where the uncertainties are statistical only. The measured valuesofthe B0s mass anditsresolution areconsistent withtheMCsimulation.

The decay model used for the B0s →Jf0 decay is a phase-space model reweighted to reflect the spin-1 structure of the Jμ+μ− decay. The corresponding models for the B0

5. Systematicuncertainties

PotentialsystematicuncertaintiesinthemeasurementofRf0

come from sources such as the B0

s signal yield extraction proce-dure,therelative efficiencyestimation, andpossiblecontributions to the B0s yields fromother decaysproducing theJ/ψπ+π− and JK+K−finalstates.

Systematicuncertaintiesinthesignal yieldextractionare esti-matedbychangingthemodelingofthesignalandthebackground invariant mass distributionsin thelikelihood fits.Forthe caseof the B0s →Jf0 mass distribution thesignal shape is changed to adouble-Gaussianfunctionandthebackgroundtoan exponential function, whilefortheB0

s →J/ψφ massdistributionthesignal is changedtoaGaussianfunctionanditsbackgroundismodeled asa first-orderpolynomialfunction.Thesechangesleadtoamaximum variationof2.1%inRf0.

There areseveralfactorsthat mayaffecttheestimate of φ/f0

(5)

thataFlattémodelisabetterdescriptionofthisdecay.Toestimate theeffectofthe simulationmodel, theBreit–Wigner modelused in the simulation is compared to a Flatté model in the selected +π− region. The differenceinthemodels reflectsa systematic errorof5.8%in φ/f0

reco.Thisisquotedasasystematicuncertainty.In addition,intheMCsimulationthef0 widthissetto50 MeV.This valueisvariedby ±10 MeV,resultinginasystematicuncertainty of 8.6% in Rf0. The models used in the MC simulation of the

Bs decaysaresettophase-space[24]insteadofthedefaultdecay

models,leading toa 6.2%systematicuncertaintyin Rf0.Finally,

thestatistical uncertaintyin φ/f0

reco owing to thefinite numberof MC events, which corresponds to 7.1%, is added as a systematic uncertainty.

Asmentionedintheintroduction,detailedstudiesofthe π+π

massspectrumoftheB0

s→J/ψπ+π−decay[2,3]inamass win-dow of0.3–2.5 GeV, reveal this final state to have contributions fromseveralresonancesin+π−,andthef0componenttorange from65.0to 94.5% in theentire masswindow studied by LHCb. To studythe effects of the interferences and the f0 fraction ob-servedbyLHCbintheestimateof φ/f0

reco,themodelreportedin[3] forthelowestf0fractionandlargestnon-resonantcomponentwas comparedtothe singleBreit–Wigner modelusedinthe MC sim-ulation of the f0→π+π decay. The comparison in the selected +π− region showsa variation of5.6% in Rf0. Thisis quoted

asasystematicuncertaintycomingfromthissource.Itcanbe ob-servedinthesameLHCbstudythatthecontaminationsfromother resonancesinthemassregion |+π−−974 MeV|<50 MeV are severalordersofmagnitudelowerthanthef0 component, includ-ingthe non-resonant S-wave. Toestimate thevariation inthe B0s yieldcomingfromthesepossible contributions,thef0 mass win-dowiswidenedfrom50to100 MeVaroundthef0mass,resulting inavariation in Rf0 of6.4%that isquoted asa systematic

un-certainty.Forthe B0

s→JK+K− decaychannel,thecontribution oftheS-waveinaφmasswindowsimilartowhatisusedinthis analysishasbeenfoundtobenegligible[29].

Combining these uncertainties in quadrature leads to a total systematicuncertaintyof16.5%.
