O presente trabalho é constituído por sete capítulos. O primeiro trata da biofísica de membranas. Este capítulo começa nas propriedades físicas das membranas passa pelas funções renal e pulmonar e acaba nos fenómenos bioelétricos. O se- gundo capítulo trata das propriedades dos gases, das suas misturas e dos contac- tos dos gases com os líquidos e tecidos. Consideram-se aplicações à respiração pulmonar, onde se destacam modelos mecânicos incluindo o da função alveolar.

O terceiro capítulo é uma introdução à biomecânica. São transmitidos os conceitos sobre o equilíbrio mecânico. Alguns aspectos da dinâmica dos sólidos são abor- dados de modo elementar. O interesse da biomecânica é realçado com exemplos de aplicação. O capítulo quarto aproxima os alunos da mecânica dos fluidos e dos problemas do caudal dos líquidos em tubos cilíndricos com comportamento elás- tico complexo. Apresenta-se um conjunto de aplicações com interesse médico à circulação sanguínea do homem. O capítulo quinto introduz conceitos elementares de física atómica, física nuclear e física das radiações, da ação biológica e da protecção contra radiações ionizantes, das aplicações de radionuclídeos em medicina e da física da luz solar. O capítulo sexto incide sobre bioenergética. Alguns modelos de cinética de enzimas são também considerados. Finalmente o capítulo sétimo trata de conceitos elementares de electricidade adaptados às aplicações médicas.

J. J. Pedroso de Lima. Professor Catedrático jubilado da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Coimbra. Foi Director do Instituto de Biofísica/Biomatemática da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Coimbra, Presidente do Conselho Directivo do IBILI, Fac. de Medicina e Responsável pelo Projecto PET, Univ. de Coimbra.

Os seus interesses científicos incidem sobre a Biofísica, os estudos funcionais com radionuclídeos e as imagens médicas. Tem cerca de trezentos artigos científicos em publicações nacionais e internacionais. É autor de diversos livros destacando-se:
