MSCA IF – proposal

Guide for applicants

MSCA work programme 2018-2020

 read the call documents carefully : guide for

applicants;

 respect the structure of part b – do not try to

innovate there!

 write with the (weighted) evaluation criteria in front

of you;

 excellent research – skills training – career

development;

 be sure your host institution (or partners) can

support you;

 start preparing early (ideally months in advance);  log in to the participant portal at an early stage and

be sure you know how to use it (it has a learning curve…);

 save versions - but try not to submit at the last

(18)

MSCA IF – proposal tips

 be ambitious – aim at the top of your scientific field

 excellent research + complementary training & career objectives  align your career strategy with that of the ERA (which is broad)  interdisciplinary and inter-sectorial well-viewed (if not essential)

 search online for presentations on how to write a proposal (especially

from NCPs – H2020 National Contact Points)

 there are NCPs for the MSCA – you can ask questions of those for your

countries of origin and/or of destination

 seek the advice of experienced colleagues – MSCA fellows  be prepared to resubmit (using evaluation summary reports)

(21)

MSCA IF – common mistakes

 it is a… “marketing/ sales” pitch of the research… and the career

development of the fellow

 the philosophy is “competitive calls” for proposals…not

“subsidies”…!

 objectives and “state-of-the-art” are elaborate and in-depth, but

implementation/ methodology, “beyond-the-state-of-the-art” and impact are under-developed.

 evaluators don’t have too much time... keep it simple and concise!  no duplications of previous works/projects, but... building on them!  use tables and diagrams (relevant and easily understandable)

 write for the “non-specialist” – educate the evaluator to understand

what you want to do and why it’s worth the funding... !

(22)

“you cannot hope to build a better world

without improving the individuals. to that end,

each of us must work for our own

improvement and, at the same time, share a

general responsibility for all humanity, our

particular duty being to aid those to whom we

think can be most useful”.

(23)
(24)

 Each proposal assessed independently by at least three

experts chosen by the EC Research Executive Agency (REA)

 An expert designated as the proposal rapporteur  Proposals evaluated remotely

 Evaluation scores awarded for each criteria from 0 to 5  Total score subject to a threshold of 70%

 Proposals ranked and funded in ranking order  Evaluation summary reports provided
