Activity 01 – Warm up

Objective

To warm-up and practice greetings.

Procedure

1. Make sure you’re in the room before the Ss.

2. Greet Ss as they enter the room using “How are you?”, “How are you doing?”, “What’s up?”.

3. Encourage Ss to respond appropriately.

Activity 02 – Catch!

Objective

To review introductions and practice greetings.

Preparation

Take a light ball to class.

Procedure

1. Stand in a circle with the Ss.

2. Throw the ball to a S.

3. Say “Hi I’m (your name).”

4.S replies “Hi I’m (S’s name)”

5. Say “How are you, (S’s name)?”

6.S replies “Fine thanks. And you?” or any other appropriate response.

7. Reply “Fine”.

8. The S then throws the ball to another S.

9. These two Ss repeat steps 3 – 8.

Activity 03 - Greetings

Objective

To practice greetings.

Preparation

Print and cut up Student Page 01.

Procedure

1. Write “Greetings” on the board.

2. You and Ss sit or stand in a circle.

3. Show the Ss a picture of a formal situation from Student Page 01.

4. Say to a S “Hello, (S’s name OR Mr/Ms S’s surname). How are you?”

5. S replies “Fine, thanks. And you?”

6. You then say “Fine”.

7. This S then greets another S in the same way.

8. This continues until you show a picture of a very informal situation.

9. You then say to a S “Hey dude. What’s up?”

10. S replies “Not much.” Or “What’s up, man?”

11. This S then greets another S in the same way.

12.This continues until you show a picture of another situation which could be formal or informal.

13. Say to a S “Hi. How are you doing?”

14.S replies “Great, thanks. And you?”

15. You then say “Fine”.

16. Explain that this expression can often be used in both formal and informal situations.

17. This S then greets another S in the same way.

18. Continue the activity.

Procedure

1. Write “Greetings” on the board.

2.Ss sit or stand in a circle. Stand in the middle.

3. Hold all the pictures from Student Page 01 face down so none of the Ss can see them.

4. Invite a S to choose a picture and show it to everybody.

5. If it’s a picture of a formal situation, you say to the S “Hello, (S’s name OR Mr/Ms S’s surname). How are you?”

6.S replies “Fine, thanks. And you?”

7. You then say “Fine”.

8. This S goes to the center of the circle and you take their original place among the other Ss.

9. Give all the pictures to the S.

10. The S in the center then chooses another S to choose a picture.

11. If Ss get a picture of an informal situation, they can use: “Hey dude. What’s up?”

“Not much.” Or “What’s up, man?”

12. If the picture shows a formal or informal situation, they can use: “Hi. How are you doing?”

“Great, thanks. And you?” “Fine”.

13. Explain that the above expression can be used in both formal and informal situations.

14. Continue the activity.

Option B

Preparation

Print and cut up Student Page 01.

Procedure

1. Ss walk around the room.

2. Hold up a picture of a formal situation from Student Page 01 so all the Ss can see it.

3.Ss walk around the room greeting one another in a formal way.

4. Clap your hands and show a picture of a very informal situation.

5. Ss then walk around greeting one another in an informal way.

Option C

Preparation

Print and cut up Student Page 01.

Procedure

1.Ss work in pairs.

2. Give each pair a picture.

3. Tell Ss to greet each other according to the pictures.

4. To continue the activity exchange pictures and pairs.

Activity 04 – Telephone Lines

Objective

To practice the numbers 0 –10.

Preparation

Print and cut up Student Page 02.

Procedure

1. Make a pile of number cards and hold it with the numbers face down.

2. Each student picks a number card, looks at it, and gives it to you.

3.Ss form an ascending line from 0 –10 (or any other number under 10 if you have less than 11 Ss) by saying their number to each other.

4.After they form the line, Ss say their numbers.

5. As they speak write the number on the board.

6. Point to the board, say the numbers and ask Ss to repeat them.

Note: If you have more than 11 Ss, some might do the activity twice so everybody can participate. If you have less than 11 Ss ask the Ss to help you to write the missing numbers on the board.

Variations

Option A

Preparation

Print and cut up Student Page 02.

Procedure

1. Do steps 1 – 2.

2. Make a note of the numbers the Ss selected if you have more or less than 11 Ss.

3. Write “Telephone number” on the board.

4. Say “My telephone number is (make up a phone number based on the numbers selected)”.

5. Repeat the phone number slowly.

6. Ss step forward as they hear their number.

7.Ss form a line in the order of the telephone number.

8. Ask Ss “What is my telephone number?”

9. Each S says their number in order.

10. To continue the activity call a different phone number and/or ask Ss to pick new numbers from the card pile.

Option B

Preparation

Print and cut up Student Page 02.

Procedure

1. Do steps 1-6 in Option A above.

2. At step 7 each S says their number, goes to the board and writes the complete written form of the number on the board.

3. Continue the activity.

Option C (with larger groups)

Preparation

Procedure

1. Divide the Ss into two teams.

2. Give one number to each S in the first team and the same number to another S in the second team.

3. Say “My telephone number is (make up a phone number using the numbers you’ve given the Ss)”.

4. The team to form a line of the correct number quickest wins the game.

Note: In Options A, B, C, you will have to adapt the length of the numbers according to the number of Ss

in the group.

Activity 05 – What’s my number?

Objective

To practice numbers 0 – 10.

Preparation

Print and cut up enough copies of Student Page 03 to give all the Ss a TELEPHONE NUMBERS! Card. Print Student Page 04 for yourself.

Procedure

1. Give each S a card from Student Page 04.

2. Read out one or more telephone numbers from Student Page 04.

3.Ss write down the dictated numbers on their cards.

4.Choose individual Ss to read the numbers back to you.

5. Tell Ss if they are right or not.

Variations

Option A

Preparation

Print and cut up enough copies of Student Page 03 to give all the Ss a TELEPHONE NUMBERS! Card. Print Student Page 04 for yourself.

2. Do steps 1 – 3.

3. Choose Ss from each team to read the numbers back to you.

4. The team with the most correct telephone numbers wins.

Option B

Preparation

Print and cut up enough copies of Student Page 03 to give all the Ss a TELEPHONE NUMBERS! Card

Procedure

1. Ss work in pairs.

2. Give each S a TELEPHONE NUMBERS! Card from Student Page 03.

3.Ss write 5 phone numbers on their TELEPHONE NUMBERS! Card.

4.S1 dictates a number to their partner S2 who writes the number on the other side of their card.

5.S2 then dictates a number to S1, who writes the number on the other side oh their card.

6.Ss continue to take turns to dictate numbers to their partner.

7.When they have finished Ss compare the original numbers with each others’ dictations.

Activity 06 – Telephone Books

Objective

To practice numbers 0 – 10.

Preparation

Print and cut up enough copies of Student page 05 to give each S a telephone book.

Procedure

1. Give each S a telephone book from Student Page 05.

2.Write the expressions “What’s your name?” and “What’s your phone number?” on the board.

3.Explain the meaning of the expressions.

5.Ss walk around the class collecting telephone numbers from their classmates using the expressions.

6.Write the expression “What’s (S’s name)’s phone number?” on the board.

7. Explain the meaning of the expression.

8. Ask a S (S1) “What’s S2’s phone number?”

9.S1 says S2’s phone number.

10. Ask S2 if the number is correct.

11.S1 asks S2 “What’s S3’s phone number?”

12. Continue the activity until all Ss have spoken at least once.

Activity 07 – Performing numbers

Objective

To practice greetings and numbers.

Preparation

Print and cut up enough copies of Student Page 06 to give one phone number to each S. Print a copy of Student Page 06 for yourself.

Procedure

1. Give each S a phone number from Student Page 06.

2. Call out a phone number from Student Page 06.

3. The S with this number (S1) goes to the front of the class and repeats the number.

4. Call out another phone number from Student Page 06.

5. The S with this number (S2) goes to the front of the class and repeats the number.

6. The two Ss greet each other and respond, using any of the following expressions: a. How are you?

b. How are you doing? c. Hey, what’s up?

d. Fine thanks (and you?). e. Great, thanks (and you?). f. What’s up?

Activity 08 – Writing: How are you?

Objective

To practice using greetings.

Preparation

Print and cut up at least one picture from Student Page 01.

Print and cut up enough copies of Student Page 07 to give a writing card to each S.

Procedure

1.Give each S a writing card from Student Page 07.

2. Show or give Ss a picture from Student Page 01.

3.Ss write a short conversation between the characters in the picture.

4.Ss can perform their conversations to the class.

Self Assessment - Performance and Enjoyment

Objective

To allow Ss to reflect on their performance and grade their enjoyment of the lesson.

Preparation

Print and cut up enough copies of Student Page 08 to give one card to each S.

Procedure

1. Ss evaluate how well they think they now know the content of the lesson and how confident they feel with the new language, by choosing one of the three options.

2. Ss assess their enjoyment of the lesson – both online and in class – by giving a rating and also writing comments, if appropriate.

Note: You can either tell the Ss that no one will read this self assessment – it is for their own use – or you can ask them to hand it in. You can also write your own assessment of each S on the card and later compare with the S’s self assessment.
