T h e u t m o s t s y m p t o m a c c o m p a n y i n g t h i s p i c t u r e is t h e h e m o l y t i c a n e m i a , w h i c h m a y i n d u c e t o h e m o g l o b i n u r i a a n d o c c a s i o n a l oligu-r i a a n d a n u oligu-r i a 5,8,17,18,20,24. T h e f a c t t h a t o n l y 1 3 % of t h e c a s e s devel o p h e m o devel y s i s devel e a d t o t h e a s s u m p t i o n of a p o s s i b l e s u s c e p t i b i l i t y of t h e s e i n d i v i d u a l s . C e r t a i n ly t h i s g r e a t e r s u s c e p t i b i l i t y w o u l d n o t b e c a u s -e d b y -e n v i r o n m -e n t a l f a c t o r s , b u t it w o u l d b -e f e a s i b l e t o r e l a t e i t t o c o n s t i t u t i v e f a c t o r s , t o g e n e t i c f a c t o r s . T h e s e c o n s t i t u t i v e f a c t o r s w o u l d b e r e p r e s e n t e d b y t h e l a c k i n g of g e n e t i -c a l l y d e t e r m i n e d p r o t e -c t i v e m e -c h a n i s m s o r b y t h e p r e s e n c e of a p r e d i s p o s i t i o n f a c t o r . T h i s l a s t h y p o t h e s i s c o u l d b e r e p r e s e n t e d b y t h e e r y t h r o c y t e g l u c o s e - 6 - p h o s p h a t e d e h y d r o g e n a s e d e f i c i e n c y . S o , t h e r e a r e m a n y d o u b t s a n d f e w c e r t a i n -t i e s o n -t h e p a -t h o g e n e s i s of -t h e h e m o l y s i s i n Lox o s c e l i s m . As h e m o l y s i s o c c u r s i n a m i n u t e p e r -c e n t a g e of a l l -c a s e s , g e n e t i -c f a -c t o r s -c o u l d a-c- ac-c o u n t for t h i s t e n d e n ac-c y , a n d t h i s h y p o t h e s i s is s t r o n l y s u p p o r t e d b y t h e f a c t t h a t v e n o m d o e s n o t l e a d t o h e m o l y s i s i n all m a m m a l s . A m o n g t h e p o s s i b l e g e n e t i c f a c t o r s t h e p r e s e n c e of a v e n o m i n b o r n i n h i b i t o r w h i c h w o u l d b e a b s e n t o r d e c r e a s e d i n s o m e i n d i v i d u a l s c o u l d b e con-s i d e r e d .
