THE CHILD DEVELOPMENT OF LANGUAGE AND PERSONAL-SOCIAL SKILLS

I n t r o d u c t i o n a n d j u s t i f i c a t i o n : t h e child h a s to have good c a r i n g and educational conditions if its development is to be adequate. This m e a n s t h a t i n s t i t u t i o n s for child education (nurseries and pre-schools) m u s t also be involved in t h e supervision and a d v a n c e m e n t to t h e development. The situation of children looked after in n u r s e r i e s / pre-schools is especially i m p o r t a n t since t h e y stay t h e r e d u r i n g most of t h e i r first childhood: 12.500 h. over a 5-year period considering an estimated 50 weeks of 50 h o u r s e a c h .O b j e c t i v e : E v a l u a t e annually t h e development of t h e language and personal-social areas of t h e children a t t e n d i n g n u r s e r i e s with good-quality a t t e n d a n c e .M e t h o d o l o g y : study of cohort to be u n d e r t a k e n in t h r e e n u r s e r i e s located in t h e city of São Paulo, in which t h e same a s s e s s m e n t had been m a d e in 2001. T h e group had been formed with 33 children from 0 to 36 m o n t h s who fulfilled t h e general r e q u i r e m e n t s of having a known gestational age, with no congenital malformations, nor being foreigners (due to language evaluation). For t h e children's' evaluation, t h e Denver II t e s t was a n d will continue being used. This i n s t r u m e n t is b e i n g considered a d e q u a t e for t h e identification of even t h e slightest development problems. T h e d a t a analysis shall be m a d e by non-parametrical methods
