False friends: words that are similar, but don’t have the same meaning!
Falsos cognatos: palavras que são semelhantes, mas não têm o mesmo significado!

Este é o início da música. É muito comum que, ao se deparar com esta letra, um estudante da língua inglesa acredite que a palavra “pretend” significa “pretender” ou
“pretendo”, e por isso acreditar que a letra não faz sentido. Mas, na realidade, esta palavra significa “fingir”!
Do mesmo jeito, é possível que você já tenha acreditado que sabia o
significado de uma palavra porque ela se parecia com uma do português, e depois descobriu que seu significado era completamente diferente. Este tipo de situação é muito comum quando estamos aprendendo uma língua estrangeira! Observe mais dois exemplos:
Nesta imagem, percebemos que o jovem acreditou que deveria PUXAR a porta, já que esta palavra e “PUSH” se parecem. Mas, na realidade, “push” significa EMPURRE.
Aqui, percebemos que o garoto queria dizer que estava BRAVO, e acabou fazendo uso de “BRAVE” por ser uma palavra semelhante na escrita. Porém, no significado, elas são bem diferentes! “Brave” significa CORAJOSO.
Pois é, essas palavrinhas que podem nos enganar possuem um nome:falsos cognatos. Ou, em inglês,false friends!
Para que você não se confunda mais com elas, trouxemos uma lista com alguns falsos cognatos muito comuns do inglês, e quais são seus reais significados na língua portuguesa:
