In July 2012, the Graduate Program in Adult Health Nursing (PROESA) completes 10 years of accreditation with CAPES. Professors, current and former graduates, and the innumerable collaborators involved in the successful course of the Program are proud to celebrate this accomplishment.

Despite being considered a young independent graduate program, PROESA actually originated in 1990 from the fusion between the two concentration areas of Nursing Fundamentals and Institutionalized Adult Health Nursing, which were previously part of the Nursing Graduate Program at the School of Nursing, University of São Paulo (EEUSP).

Throughout its history, and founded on solid bases built by the various advisers of the Medical-Surgical Nursing Department, past and present, PROESA has always been committed to preparing researchers of excellence in Adult Health Nursing.

PROESA has continuously improved over the years, and is currently among the top four Brazilian nursing graduate programs. This outstanding position is mainly due to the knowledge and skills of its faculty, who are mature and expe-rienced and are responsible for the academic soundness of the Program.

In addition to the quality of the curriculum of the Masters and Doctorate courses and the qualiication of its faculty,

PROESA stands out as a result of the infrastructure it offers for teaching and research activities. Some of the highlights

of the program are the irmly entrenched Research Groups, the Animal Model Experimental Laboratory (LEMA) and the Microbiology Trials Laboratory (LEM), all of which conduct investigations integrating academia, business and government.

PROESA, articulated by the thematic axes of advanced clinical care and the care context, produces innovative knowledge in the scope of adult health nursing focusing on four research lines: Care of adults with non-communicable chronic diseases, Care of adults with acute and critical diseases, Technology in adult health, and Work dynamics in adult health.

It is within this scope, and considering the commitment of PROESA to disseminate the knowledge produced by its group of researchers and current and former graduates, that this special edition of the Journal of São Paulo University School of Nursing (REEUSP) is presented.

In this edition, readers will access original research papers from the four research lines that comprise the Program, with relevant themes on advanced clinical care and the context of care in Adult Health Nursing.

Finally, it should be highlighted that we take even greater pride in celebrating ten years of PROESA in the same year that the USP School of Nursing celebrates its 70th anniversary, always committed to building human resources of excellence, and most of all to promoting, maintaining and recovering human health.

Congratulations to the USP School of Nursing! Congratulations, PROESA!
