1. fornecer uma visão alargada do pensamento sobre tradução no Ocidente e os modos como esta constitui(u) instrumento de alargamento criativo do cânone ocidental;
universal»;
1. interpretação de textos e posicionamentos críticos, situando-os no contexto epocal e geográfico em que foram produzidos;
2. reflexão crítica de pressupostos culturais subjacentes à produção, receção e circulação de textos literários;
Learning outcomes of the curricular unit
Goals:
1. to provide students with an overview of the Western reflection on translation and of the ways translation has become an ‘instrument’ of creativity in the Western canon;
2. to deconstruct pre-conceptions regarding translation, opening up intellectual horizons and discussing age-old notions such as ‘fidelity’, ‘equivalence’, ‘original’, etc.;
3. to discuss the ideas of ‘canon’ and ‘world literature’;
4. to produce serious case studies on the role translation and translators have played throughout the ages.
Competencies:
1. interpretation of texts and critical positionings, locating them in time and space;
2. critical reflection on the cultural environment underlying the production, reception and circulation of literary texts;
3. research into translation history (products, agents and impacts).
Considerando a liminalidade do tradutor enquanto agente (inter)cultural e cocriador, procurar-se-á iluminar percursos, constrangimentos e conseguimentos da tradução no Ocidente.
Syllabus
It is the aim of this seminar to provide an overview of the Western thought on translation throughout the centuries. To attain this goal, fundamental texts will be read and discussed, and critical reflection on the act of translating and its impact on ‘world literature’ will be strongly encouraged.
The seminar wishes to promote awareness of the complexity of the translator’s task. Bearing in mind the liminality of the translator as an (inter)cultural agent and co-creator of the text, the group is meant to explore paths, constraints and successes of Western translation practice. Concepts such as ‘world literature’ and ‘canon’ will be discussed critically, while at the same time assessing the ways in which they have shaped and been shaped by translation.
The seminar is organized around three pillars: (1) the discussion of concepts;
(2) a brief history of translation in the Western thought and (3) description and interpretation of case studies.
Teaching methodologies (including evaluation)
Teaching: The seminar is organized in eight three-hour sessions, which will include expository moments as well as debate with and among students. The specific contents of each session will be made public in advance, together with a list of specific readings, so that students are able to prepare the assigned texts and the debate.
Assessment: Student assessment is continuous, which means that critical reflection on the texts and topics to be discussed and quality interventions are most welcome (20%). In addition, students will be required to prepare and present one oral assignment (20%) and to submit a final written paper (60%).
Sine qua non conditions for approval in the seminar are the ability and willingness to reflect and discuss the proposed issues and texts, a thorough command of the Portuguese language and the capacity for serious research.
Any evidence of plagiarism is a disciplinary offense and will result in a penalty. A mark of zero (0) will be awarded for the assignment.
