Materials Research - Ibero-american Journal of Materials

Judicious, fair and educative!

This issue of Materials Research contains articles selected from regular submissions in the period 2006-2007, and a number of papers related to biomaterials that were carefully selected from hundreds presented at the 4th COLAOB (Latin American Congress of Artificial

Organs and Biomaterials) held in Caxambú, MG, Brazil, on August 2006, as well as at the 17th CBECIMAT

(Bra-zilian Congress of Materials Science and Engineering) held in Iguaçu Falls, Brazil, on November 2006. The review process for all these papers was done via internet: papers submitted in electronic format were e-mailed to two referees each and the review reports were received by e-mail. All the procedures necessary to assemble the present issue were thus carried out via e-mail. We are still testing a software interface for on-line submission, evaluation and manuscript follow-up which, hopefully, will significantly improve the interaction of authors and referees with the editors.

Dozens of regular articles are being reviewed at present. The selection process of several other papers presented at the 17th CBECIMAT is also underway.

From 110 submitted papers, 56 were pre-qualified by the CBECIMAT technical committee and are now un-dergoing a regular review process. Articles presented at the annual meeting of the Associação Brasileira de Metalurgia e Materiais (ABM) in 2006 are also under evaluation.

We should emphasize once more that we do not publish conference proceedings; instead we judiciously select papers presented at different conferences, which are viewed by our team as important sources of articles for thematic or regular issues. Pre-selected conference papers are analyzed by two referees of Materials Research using the same criteria applied for the regular papers.

Materials Research is now indexed in the powerful electronic database SCOPUS (http://www.scopus.com/ scopus/home.url), which allows one to search articles by title, keyword, author name, etc., and also shows article citations. The registration in the ISI database is still being collectively processed jointly with several other SCIELO journals.

We gratefully aknowledge CNPq and CAPES for covering the editorial and printing costs of this issue of Mat. Res. The financial support from Departamento de Engenharia de Materiais, Universidade Federal de São Carlos - DEMa/UFSCar - for mailing expenses; from Laboratório de Materiais Vítreos - LaMaV/UFSCar for fax and telephone expenses are also acknowledged. As-sociação Brasileira de Metalurgia e Materiais – ABM – and Associação Brasileira de Polímeros – ABPol – covered the editorial assistant’s salary. The secretaries of Associação Brasileira de Cerâmica – ABC – ABPol and ABM have helped advertising Materials Research and with the management of its subscriptions and finan-cial resources.
