Day 77 - Olympic Torch Bulletin Board

News of the Rio 2016 Olympic Torch Relay Across Brazil. An

update on the day’s events.

AFTERNOON

This Monday (18), the Rio 2016 Olympic Torch Relay heads for Ribeirão Preto, stopping at Jaú, Araraquara and São Carlos.

In Jaú, sportive presentations of karate and capoeira, as well as cultural events, with orchestra and choir, cheered up the start of the relay in town. Renata Burgos was the one to open the 77th day of relay, a swimming athlete who represented Brazil on 4x100 metres category at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. “I’m relieving each moment of my participation at the Games, that unique feeling of realizing you are among the best in the world. Today is the same”, she said.

A kung-fu pro, Michele Abrano paid a special tribute to the Olympic flame, which she carried today. “I chose to practice martial arts for the personal growing and discipline it offers”, she said.

Classified for the competitions of the table tennis CM7 category at the Paralympic Games, Paulo Salmin promises a tough dispute at the Rio 2016 Games. “A lot of people know ‘ping-pong’, which is a hobby, a Sunday entertainment for families, but we take it very seriously, training 12 hours a day to present a high-level sport. Those who come to see it will know”, said the athlete, who has represented Brazil at the 2012 London Olympic Games. “It’s a crowning of our work and a preview of the competition”, he said.

With two participations at athletics relay contests in Olympic Games (4x100m in Sydney and 4x200m in Athens), Cláudio de Souza crossed the finished line one more time today, this time with the Olympic flame instead of a baton in his hands. “I consider this to be my third

In Araraquara, at the Arena da Fonte stadium, there were capoeira performances with groups from the county’s cultural workshops, the taiko from the Nipo-Brasileira Cultural Association, and the county’s artistic gymnastics group.

Alex Viana is a Paralympic swimming athlete who started at the sport with the help of an NGO from Araraquara. His performance was so good he was soon competing. “I’m happy and

anxious for the confirmation of my spot. But today I’m only celebrating this early participation at the Games”, he said, who waits for confirmation of his participation at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Lauro Charman always rode bikes. When he was invited to compete in para-cycling, he

became one of the best in the world. This year, he went to Belgium and was among the 20 best. “I’m happy because I’ll be participating at the Paralympic Games on four different contests and today I’m extremely proud for carrying the torch. My son was just recently born, less than one month ago, and this moment also goes for him”, he said.

Roseli Gustavo da Silva made part of the female national basketball team in the 1990’s, the sport’s golden age, and achieved the world championship and silver at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. “This emotion is very strong. It’s a joy of being here with my athletes, who I want inspire more every time. This torch will help me to form even more athletes”, she affirmed. Roberto de Macedo always liked horses, and at 11 years old, after much insisting, he got his father to buy him one so he could start training. The competitions came naturally, and after state and national titles, Roberto entered the national team and competed at the Sydney 2000

Olympic Games. “My passion for animals comes from early childhood and I keep competing at contests throughout Brazil. To be here as a torchbearer means to relight the Olympic flame inside me. For me, the Games have already started”, he said.

Osmar Volpe, ‘Pio’, was Palmeiras’ left back in the late 60’s. I went to play in Greece for

Palmeiras once and never imagined the Olympic flame could come to me. I’m very honored and happy, particularly for having my course at Arena da Fonte Luminosa stadium, representing all football athletes from Araraquara”, he said.
