A great challenge for education these days is the fact that many of the students are becoming information repeaters and not thinkers with the potential of relecting on this information, criticize it, or even rework it to develop new ideas or capacities.
I do not remember who expressed these words, but I have to fully agree with them. It is easily observed in the articles submitted to REM, which clearly demonstrate the “enormous rush” of the authors to comply with the old and dangerous saying “Publish or Perish”. Because of this “rush”, the magazine’s staff is facing situations of plagiarism, discordance with publishing regulations, and lack of veriication of the relevance of the article, etc. It is only after the correction of these situations that the analysis of the article’s merit for publication can begin. As such, REM has recently established new rules (encountered in our site: www.rem.com.br: General Instruction). In addition, REM has adopted the use of CrossRef to detect plagiarism, etc.
Another challenge for scientiic publishers is the fact that the articles are multidis-ciplinary. Therefore, the publisher needs to attend to the relationship between various areas, i.e. REM needs to deal with issues regarding research and discovery of mineral areas (geology), their ore’s exploitation (mining), the ore’s transformation (metallurgy and materials) and its usage (civil engineering), among others. The above mentioned areas are part of the educational program of the School of Mines/UFOP. With the ampliica-tion of the courses offered at the Escola de Minas/UFOP, a new area (mechanical and energy) has been added. In this issue, the irst article from this new area is published.
By publishing this article, REM seeks to open its pages to a new subject, increas-ing its multidisciplinarity.

PublisherO grande desaio de educação atual é o fato de que todos os alunos estão se tornando repetidores de informações e não pensadores com potencialidade de reletir sobre elas, criticá-las, ou mesmo retrabalhá-las para desenvolver novas ideias ou capacidades.
Concordo plenamente com esse pensamento, não me recordo do autor. Isto é facilmente observado nos artigos submetidos à REM, os quais mostram a “enorme pressa” dos autores para atender o velho e perigoso lema “Publish or Perish”. À medida que a pressa ocorre, as revistas buscam se proteger de plágios, do não atendimento às normas de publicação, da veriicação da relevância do trabalho, etc., para só então dar início à análise do mérito do artigo. Ultima-mente a REM criou novas regras (leia em nosso site www.rem.com.br: General Instructions), adotou o uso de CrossRef para detectar plágio, etc.
Outro desaio das publicações cientíicas está no fato de elas serem mul-tidisciplinares, pois as relações entre as áreas, por exemplo da REM, devem se complementar: desde as pesquisas e descobertas de áreas minerais (geologia), a sua explotação (Mineração), sua transformação (Metalurgia e Materiais) e o seu uso (Engenharia Civil). Todas elas fazem parte da formação da Escola de Minas/ UFOP. Com a ampliação dos cursos da Escola de Minas/UFOP, uma nova área se junta às demais: Mecânica e Energia. Nesse número, está sendo publicado o primeiro artigo dessa recente área de estudos.
Com essa adoção, a REM busca uma nova abertura, aumentando sua interdisciplinaridade.
