The aim of the research conducted from 2001 to 2010 on a river with a length of 2 km was a complex sedimentological study of slopes and alluvial bodies of the Ialomita River (left tributary of the Danube). Technical rehabilitation, followed by biological rehabilitation and management of the degraded mining area are the generally accepted methods for eliminating the consequences of mining in nature. To mitigate the harmful consequences of open pit mining development, mining should be followed by biological rehabilitation of mine banks and degraded landscape management in order to establish diverse vegetation and other ecosystems in the tailings piles.

The organizational structure of the project was hierarchical, starting from the local level, the quarry level, expanding to the regional/national level and ending with the transnational one. Transportation is a major factor in determining the delivered price of aggregates – as the cost of transportation from plant to market can exceed the selling price of the product.
