Frenkel greatly contributed to the development of concepts of quasi-free states and quasi-particles in condensed matter physics, the study of electroconductivity in metals, defects in crystalline structures and transport mechanisms in condensed systems. The ingenuity of Frenkel’s ideas set the foundation of many scientific disciplines, from physics and physical chemistry of condensed states, to the science of sintering and materials science. The originality of his scientific ideas represents an unexhausted heritage still used by generations of scientists in numerous disciplines.

Finally, Chemistry is having a unique opportunity to launch into Molecular Nanotechnology on a very competitive basis. This is already evident by the inclusion of nanotechnological themes in the international chemistry journals, even in the classical ones. On the other hand, special attention should be given to the formation of qualified Chemists for the Nanotechnology market. Nanosciences and Nanotechnology are essentially interdisciplinary, and strong links should be established between Chemistry and Materials Science, Electronics and Biology, in the undergraduate curriculum, while improving the connections with Physics and Mathematics. So, let’s start thinking about it: the students will be the main actors in the incoming Nanotechnology age!

Articles carefully selected from the annual meeting of the Associação Brasileira de Metalurgia e Materiais (ABM) in 2006 will be published in the next issues. We emphasize once more that we do not publish conference proceedings; instead we judiciously select papers presented at different conferences, which are viewed by our team as important sources of articles for thematic or regular issues. Such conference papers are analyzed by our referees using the same criteria applied for the regular papers.

The study of Materials Science, which is the base for the Materials Engineering and allows to imple- ment the practical activities of fabrication, forming, functionalization, aesthetics preparation and maintenance of all appliances, devices and equipment utilized by humankind, is essentially based on the comprehension of Nature’s symmetry. To understand the materials it is necessary to deeply observe and analyze their internal content, to unveil their inner constitution by means of the microstructural species. The technic-scientific eva- luation of materials’ microstructure enables understanding and designing their properties, which defines the Engineering performance of components, making them suitable for practical use by the society. Such me- tallographic characterization creates scientific and technologic valued material, but also, frequently, posses- ses attractive figurative aesthetic. This allows cogitating if the result of the metallographic analysis could also be considered a piece of art. Normally, this is not the way the metallographic analysis is evaluated, since it is made with technical and scientific objectives. However, it should be considered that the person who obtains a micrographic image uses his/her own discretion to choose the best framing that will show the microstructural species therein present. Similarly as they are explored and arranged in such a way to emphasize the technical aspect searched, they may also be presented in an aesthetically interesting configuration. For such, the per- son’s state of sprit and emotions will contribute for the choice made and, as such, he/she will act as an artist, who discharges his/her feelings in a painting, sculpture or other forms of art. The result of the micrographic work will also be consider ed then as artistic and will unveil matter’s art, in addition to the technical characte- rization.

The present study utilizes a simple and inexpensive procedure of synthesizing agarose nanoparticles for exploiting it as a nanomatrix for immobilizing β-galactosidase. Immobilized enzyme exhibited marked stabilization against physical denaturation (at various pH and temperature ranges), and against galactose mediated product inhibition. ANPs offered unique opportunities in providing shape and size selectivity for molecules too large to react within the framework of conventional nanostructured materials, thereby serving as stable catalytic supports. Moreover, immobilized enzyme system obtained on galactose modified ANPs does not seem to be restricted by diffusional limitations and hence can be exploited in biotechnological process for producing lactose-free dairy products.

Industrial fermentations are moving away from traditional and largely empirical operations towards knowledge based and better controlled processes. The metabolic performance of a microbial culture in the bioreactor strongly depends on complex interactions of the various operating conditions. The production of enzymes in large-scale is mostly carried out in batch fermentation in stirred tank bioreactors. Both physical and biological factors are quite different in a fermentor compared to that in a shake flask. The selection of design conditions and operational procedures are very relevant in scaling-up process to ensure that the effect of variables on the process is the same. Up-scaling the fermentation processes from lab-scale to commercial units is challenging due to the difficulty in assessing the factors affecting the scale-up process during the cultivation. It is well known that microorganisms are more susceptible in large-scale environmental variables, such as pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO) and composition of raw materials. These variables have an ample effect on the microbial cell growth and metabolite production (Yuh-Lih et al. 2002). It is well known that extracellular protease production by microorganisms in bioreactors is greatly affected by media components, physical factors such as aeration, agitation, dissolved oxygen, temperature;
