2.3.2 Nomenclatura da disciplina escolar:

É de menor variabilidade a nomenclatura da disciplina escolar expressa nos títulos dos documentos. A primazia é conferida à denominação de Social Studies como podemos observar nos 39 currículos estaduais de Alabama, Alasca, Arkansas, Arizona, Carolina do Norte, Carolina do Sul, Colorado, Connecticut, Dakota do Norte, Dakota do Sul, Delaware, Flórida, Geórgia, Havaí, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Mississipi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, Nova Hampshire, Nova Iorque, Nova Jersey, Novo México, Oklahoma, Ohio, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virgínia Ocidental, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming.

Cinco estados denominam a disciplina escolar de History-Social Science (História/Ciências Sociais): Califórnia, Massachussets, Minnesota, Vermont e Virgínia. No Kansas, o documento determina que lida com History and Government; Economics and

Geography (História e Governo; Economia e Geografia); já na Pensilvânia, temos History; Economics; Geography; Civics and Goverment (História; Economia; Geografia; Civismo e

Totalizam, assim, apenas oito documentos que destacam em seus títulos o conhecimento histórico como conteúdo dos Estudos Sociais e/ou Ciências Sociais – relativos a Califórnia, Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virgínia. Em geral, a mudança na nomenclatura da disciplina não altera a percepção de que se tratam dos clássicos

Social Studies. Não obstante, a postura desses estados indica a promoção explícita da História

como disciplina dominante entre as humanidades.
