As poças temporárias em clima semiárido representam um ambiente muito importante por fornecer água à população local para os mais diversos usos durante parte do ano. Além disso, suas características peculiares favorecem a existência de espécies endêmicas, havendo uma alta diversidade de seres vivos nesses ambientes.

Espera-se contribuir para a elaboração e execução de ações que visem conservar e manter os ambientes de poças temporárias. Para isso, é necessário um conhecimento das variáveis abióticas e dos componentes bióticos que habitam esses locais.

O conhecimento dos macroinvertebrados que habitam as poças temporárias e a sua relação com as variáveis abióticas podem auxiliar na realização de biomonitoramento, que é a utilização de animais para se inferir o nível de alguns parâmetros limnológicos de qualidade da água.

Dessa forma, será possível associar a abundância e riqueza de determinados grupos a um ambiente mais degradado ou menos degradado, através de um índice pré-estabelecido. Com isso, poderá se avaliar frequentemente a qualidade da água e tentar identificar possíveis fontes poluidoras.

Esse processo já é utilizado no Brasil, com índices europeus modificados. Entretanto, é necessária a adaptação para a região semiárida. Uma vez que os animais dessa região possuem estratégias de vida diferentes de regiões temperadas, a relação entre a sua abundância e os parâmetros limnológicos provavelmente difere dos índices feitos em outros continentes.

Com um índice de biomonitoramento adaptado para a região, poderão ser feitos projetos de educação ambiental na comunidade, a fim de que as pessoas compreendam a importância desse ambiente, como utilizar melhor a água das poças e de que forma elas podem prevenir a sua degradação.
