Diversos são os temas que requerem pesquisas e poderiam ser objeto de trabalhos futuros para a promoção do manejo florestal sustentável e da própria certificação florestal. Dentre eles podem ser elencados:
- Ampliação do estudo comparativo a outros sistemas/ esquemas/ programas de certificação florestal nacionais, uma vez que existem mais de 50 praticados no mundo;
- Ampliação dos critérios utilizados para comparar os atuais sistemas/ esquemas/ programas de certificação florestal;
- Estudo de caso sobre custos de implantação dos requisitos estabelecidos na norma de manejo florestal e do processo de certificação florestal;
- Estudo de caso sobre o impacto da certificação florestal em organização que tem a mesma implantada, quanto aos aspectos de aumento das exportações, vendas nacionais, melhoria de imagem, etc.;
- Identificação de requisitos sociais e ambientais a serem incorporados na norma de cadeia de custódia;
- Introdução do tema na ISO buscando a elaboração de uma norma internacional sobre cadeia de custódia e princípios gerais de manejo florestal;
- Introdução do tema no IAF buscando um fórum internacionalmente reconhecido para discutir acreditação de organismos que operam a certificação florestal.
