The needle you use must be straight, with a sharp point, to ensure perfect stitch formation and needle penetration through the fabric. Loosen the needle set screw and insert the needle into the needle bar as far as possible, with the long groove towards you. Hold the handwheel with your left hand and turn the stop-motion screw towards you with your right hand.

Wind the thread end around the bobbin a few times and press the lock E against the bobbin, then start the machine. Remove the bobbin from the spindle and tighten stop-motion screw A by turning it away from you with your right hand while holding the handwheel with your left hand. Reach up from under the table with your left hand, open bobbin case lock A, and lift out bobbin case B.

Pull the thread out of the slot at the end of the spring and thread it through the bobbin case thread guard C. NOTE: For straight sewing, you may get better results if you do not pass the bobbin thread through the bobbin case thread guard C. To wind the bobbins while the machine is sewing, just follow the previous instructions, do not loosen the stop screw.

To adjust the amount of thread on the bobbin, loosen the screw F on the lock E and, while holding the pin G with a screwdriver, swing the lock E away from you or towards you as required.

TO ADJUST THREAD TENSIONS

To sew fixed-width zigzag stitches, loosen thumbscrews A and B, turn stitch width adjuster C to the desired stitch width, and while holding adjuster C in this position, tighten thumbscrew B. This locks the stitch width adjuster in the desired position, leaving both hands free to handle the substance. Turn stitch width adjuster C to the desired width for the narrow zigzag stitch, and while holding adjuster C, tighten thumb screw B.

Then turn stitch width regulator C to desired width for the wider zigzag stitch and tighten thumb screw A. After setting the machine as indicated above, the narrow width zigzag can now be sewn without adjusting the stitch width regulator C. To work the wider zigzag, the stitch width regulator must be turned as far as it will go and held in this position until the wider zigzag stitch is completed.

This method of adjusting the stitch width is very useful when sewing the side stitches and bartacks of a buttonhole.

HOW TO CONTROL THE WIDTH OF ZIGZAG STITCH

Using a screwdriver, remove the bed plate 8 as shown in the sketch on the right and remove the feed dog C. To replace the feed dog with straight stitch or straight stitch, temporarily connect the feed dog to the machine and replace the feed dog with straight stitch general or fair. Position the feed dog correctly so that it does not hit the edges of the feed dog slot on the throat plate.

To reinforce the seams, push the seam reset down to its lowest position and sew backwards.

NOTE: After making the above adjustments, you can now sew the side seams by turning the stitch width adjuster as far as it will go either by hand or by knee. Lock stitch: With the needle in the fabric at point C, raise the presser foot and rotate the work on the needle. Lower the foot and sew four or five stitches at point D above the first side stitch.

Then set the machine to straight stitch and take approximately three stitches at point E to secure the seam. Tape Holds: When all buttonholes are finished, it is advisable to reinforce the ends of the buttonhole with bar tacks. Adjust the stitch width adjuster so that the tape catches are aligned with the outside edges of the left and right side seams.

Lift the needle from the fabric, set the machine to straight stitch, and baste about three stitches on the back, finishing the securing stitch in the same way as the side seam.

APPLIQUE

You can also vary the width of the stitches from a hairline to the full width of your chosen stitch width setting simply by moving the hoop or by adjusting the stitch width regulator as you sew. If you move it sideways and sew in a horizontal line, you'll end up with a hairline; if you move it forward or backward and sew in a vertical line, you get the full stitch width. This takes practice, but you can achieve beautiful effects much like hand embroidery.

If the fabric is soft or loosely woven, add an underlayment of fresh lawn or organdy. This attaches to the machine in place of the regular presser foot and can be adjusted to the right or left side of the needle. Stitch width regulator: Straight stitch position Stitch plate: General purpose or Straight stitch Presser foot: Zipper foot.

Loosen the thumb screw B at the back of the foot and move the foot to the left of the needle. Check the position of the foot by lowering the needle into the side notch A of the foot, and make sure it clears the foot. When the zipper is on the left side of the needle, adjust the foot to the right of the needle in the same way.

HEMMER FOOT

The cord seam is a typical treatment for drapery covers, children's clothing, blouses and underwear. Stitch close to the cord (but don't stitch against the cord), pulling the strip lightly, both in front and behind the zipper foot.
