After successful organization of the last year's International Symposium for early intervention and developmental disorders, the Association of Special Educators and Rehabilitators of the Republic of Macedonia continues its activities for promoting the theory and practice of special education through organizing professional events.

At the meeting held on 26.12.2011, the presidency of the Association decided to organize a symposium with the subject "Inclusive education - current status, future challenges". Aside the Association, among the organizers will be the Macedonian Ministry of Education and Sciences and the Faculty of Philosophy - Institute of Special Education and Rehabilitation. The symposium will be held from 17th until 19th of May 2012, in Strumica. The conference has three main goals:

1) to present the developed systems of inclusive education;

2) to get an overview of the existing condition of the inclusive process in Macedonia from the primarily involved parties’ perspective; 3) to get an overview of the challenges that

Macedonia will face moving towards improvement of the inclusive education for

children with special needs in the preschools and the elementary and secondary schools.

The program of the scientific conference will be constructed based on the received scientific articles which are within the framework of the topic of interest. The main themes of the conference are:

1. Assessment and identification of the specific needs of this category of children.

2. Multidisciplinary approach in the inclusive education.

3. Parents role in the inclusive education; 4. Individual Educational Plan.

5. Profile and competency of teachers and special educators involved in the inclusive education.

6. Change Management - models of good practice.

7. Services for support of the inclusive education.

The target groups on the conference are:

1. professionals - special educators and rehabilitators (various profiles);

2. institutions that work in the field of protection, education, rehabilitation and treatment of children with special educational needs and persons with disabilities;

3. parents of children with and without special educational needs included in the mainstream educational system;

4. members of the pedagogical and

psychological services of mainstream preschools, elementary and secondary schools;

5. teachers working in mainstream preschools, elementary and secondary schools;

6. head masters of mainstream preschools, elementary and secondary schools;

7. representatives of the central and local authorities;

8. associations of persons with disabilities. Considering the relevance of the topic, media coverage of the event is expected. The media coverage will contribute in raising the public awareness of the inclusive education as a major social change. The members of the Association of Educators in Macedonia expect the event to be an inception for joint creation of mechanisms and policies that will promote the inclusive education in the preschools and the primary and secondary educational institutions.
