Derek Gat herer t rained as a m olecular developm ent al biologist at I m perial College and, aft er post docs in Quit o, Warwick and Cam bridge, was Lect urer in Molecular Genet ics at Liverpool John Moores Universit y from 1996 t o 1999. Since 2003 he has been at t he Medical Research Council Virology Unit in Glasgow . During t he int ervening period he w orked in t he phar m aceut ical indust ry in various

bioinform at ics- relat ed capacit ies for Organon, EraGen, RiboTarget s and Chem ical Com put ing Group ( CCG I nc) . His int erest s are anyt hing t hat can be done on a com put er w it h applicat ion t o biology, but for pract ical purposes over t he last couple of years t his has m eant t he com parat ive m olecular evolut ion of herpesviruses. His previous work has covered t he origin and evolut ion of periodically- st ruct ured prot eins, t he relat ionship of codon bias wit h genom ic GC cont ent , and, w hile in indust ry, t he product ion of exhaust ive cat alogues of G- prot ein coupled recept ors from com plet ed genom es. He is current ly writ ing an unreasonably long review art icle on t he pioneering syst em s biology work of Walt er Elsasser ( 1904-1991) .
