HIGHER ORDER SCHWARZIAN DERIVATIVES FOR CONVEX UNIVALENT FUNCTIOS

M. Dorff, J. Szynal

We observe that in contrast to the classS, the extremal func-tions for the bound of higher order Schwarzian derivatives for the classSc

of convex univalent functions are different. We prove the sharp bound for three first consecutive derivatives.

LetS denote the class of holomorphic and univalent functions in the unit diskD=z:|z|<1 of the form

f(z) =z+a2z2+a3z3+..., z∈D,

andSc⊂S the class consisting of convex functions. Let

S(f)(z) =f

′′

(z) f′(

z) ′

−1 2

f′′(z)

f′(

z) 2

, z∈D

denote the Schwarzian derivative forf. Let us denote σ3(f) =S(f) and

let the higher order Schwarzian derivative be defined inductively (see [5]) as:

σn+1(f) = (σn(f))

−(n−1)σn(f)·

f′′

f′ , n≥4 (1)

In [5] it was proved that the upper bound for|σn(f)|, f ∈Sis attained

for the Koebe function for eachn= 3,4, ....

In this note we show that situation is different when we deal with the class of convex univalent functions. Because of linear invariance of the classSc one can restrict the considerations toσ

n(f)(0) :=Sn. We have

the following

c

(2)

Theorem 1. Iff ∈Sc, then the following sharp estimates hold:

|S3|=|6(a3−a22)| ≤2,

|S4|= 24|a4−3a3a2+ 2a 3 2| ≤4,

|S5|= 24|5a5−20a4a2−9a23+ 48a3a22−24a 4 2| ≤12.

The extremal functions (up to rotations) have the form

fn(z) = Z z

0

(1−tn−1

)−n21dt, n= 3,4,5, (2)

respectively.

Proof.From (1) one can easily find

σ4(f) = f

Note that in [5] there are two misprints in the last formula. Therefore we have from (3):

S3= 6(a3−a22),

S4= 24(a4−3a2a3+ 2a32),

S5= 24(5a5−20a4a2−9a23+ 48a3a22−24a 2 2).

(4)

We are going to use the connection of the classSc and functions with positive real part in D, as well as the functions satisfying the Schwarz lemma conditions.

Namely we have

f ∈Sc⇔1 + zf

′′(z)

f′z =p(z) =

1 +ω(z)

1−ω(z), z∈D, (5)

wherep(z) = 1+p1z+p2z2+..., Re{p(z)}>0, z∈D(i.e.,p∈P, the class

of functions with positive real part) andω(z) =c1z+c2z2+...,|ω(z)|<

1, z∈D(i.e., ω∈Ω, the class of Schwarz functions). From (5) we find

(3)

and because|c2| ≤1− |c1|2,

|S3| ≤2

which is as well the well-known result of Hummel [1]. The extremal func-tion is

f3(z) =

Z z

0

dt 1−t2 =

1 2log

1 +z 1−z.

The functional S4 has a special form of the functional |a4 +sa2a3 +

ua3

2|, u, s ∈ R which was estimated sharply for each s, u ∈ R in [4] and

therefore the result follows by takings=−3, u= 2 in Theorem 1 in [4]. The extremal function is determined by takingω(z) =z3in (5) which

gives (2). Finally in order to get the bound for|S5| which is complicated

we transform it to the class Ω of Schwarz functionsω(z). By equating the coefficients in (5) one can find the relations:

a2=c1,

a3=

1

3(c2+ 3c

2 1),

a4=

1

6(c3+ 5c1c2+ 6c+ 1

3

),

a5=

1 10(c4+

14 3 c3c1+

43 3 c2c

2

1+ 2c

2

2+ 10c

4 1),

witch transformS5as given by (4) to a nicer form

S5= 12(c4−2c3c1+c2c21). (6)

Now we can try to estimate (6) by the use of the Carath´eodory inequalities applied to the class Ω as it was done in [4]. However, this leads to very complicated calculations. But one can observe that within the class Ω the functional|c4−2c3c1+c2c21|and|c4+ 2c3c1+c2c21|have the same upper

bound, because ifω(z)∈Ω, thenω1(z) =−ω(−z)∈Ω.

On the other hand, comparing the coefficients pk and ck in (5) one

gets

p1= 2c1,

p2= 2(c2+c 2 1),

p3= 2(c3+ 2c1c2+c31),

p4= 2(c4+ 2c1c3+c 2

2+ 3c

2 1c2+c

(4)

from which we obtain that

2(c4+ 2c3c1+c2c 2

1) =p4−

1 2p

2 2.

Leutwiller and Schober [3] gave the precise bound for|p4−12p22| ≤2, which

implies that|c4+ 2c3c1+c31|=|c4−2c3c1+c31| ≤1.This completes the

proof. The extremal function is obtained by takingω(z) =z4

in (5). Note that writingS5with the coefficients ofpk leads to another ”bad”

expression

Remark 1. We conjecture that for everyn= 6, ...the maximal value of |Sn|is attained by the function given by (2).

Remark 2. The application of the general approach to the bound S4

andS5would lead within the classP to consideration of functions of the

form

p(z) =

n X

k=1

λk

1 +ze−iθk

1−ze−iθk, n≤4

or 5, which is very difficult to handle because it involves long and tedious calculations.

Remark 3. One can observe that the bound for|σn(f)|given in [5]

fol-lows directly from the formula(1) in [5] and the result of R.Klouth and K.-J.Wirths[2].
