INTRODUCTION

As the second semester of studying requires doing an internship to get the Master Degree in Translation and Multilingual Communication at the University of Minho in Portugal, I conducted a four-month internship at the company Menina Design Group.

The report describes the training translation experience in the design company Menina Design Group as a part of internship and preparation for the defense of the Master Diploma. It also examines the notion of translation and its impact upon the virtual dialog and the source of information provided by blogs. It discovered the existence of several factors, namely strategies, techniques, methods that interlock to create a unique complex setting.

The motivation for this work is to analyse the translation of the texts during the four month internship, to determine the main characteristics of translation, implementing different translation tools and resources.

Moreover, the internship report systematises translation strategies and techniques used in the translation process of the information taken from the blogs. The goal consists in observing some kind of tendency in the blog translation, and hence hopefully to make a fresh contribution to resolving current problems in translation.

Within the translation internship it was aimed to achieve the following objectives: ¾ Translate texts of different content types in EN to De;

¾ Distinguish the difficulties and main features of the blog translation process; ¾ Define the main accomplishments in translation and internship experience; ¾ Create a glossary of the words most used in EN and De in the field of design

and blog advertising;

Equipped with the typology drawn from this context, it may be considered the significance of internship experience today. One of the main arguments is that weblogs are important not only as such, but even more as a sign of an emerging new category of news and current affairs communication.

1. THE PHENOMENON OF BLOG AND ITS ROLE IN ADVERTISING

According to the Oxford English Dictionary a blog is “a personal website or web page on which an individual records opinions, links to other sites on a regular basis.” (Oxford English Dictionary, 2010:181) Every blog includes comments and links. In order to make a post, it is necessary to use specific publishing software. (What is a Blog?, 2014) Starting blogs as online diaries, people were submitting information about their daily life and sharing their point of view. As time went on, online shopping and more interactive internet changed the role of blogs. Thus, blogs evolved a lot and today plenty of world companies use them as a form of advertising products and services. It may be said that there is a growing importance of advertising on blogs. (E-Marketing Set: Concepts, Methodologies, Tools, and Applications, 2012:200) Plenty of companies, like Google and General Motors, have created the blogs with the aim to promote their production. At the same time there exists a problem of totally ignoring the consumers’ perception of blogs carrying advertisements and sponsored posts. In view of this fact, the research is done to investigate whether blogs are effective in advertising technique or not. The discussions regarding the possible advantages of using blogs as a marketing tool are on agenda. (E-Marketing: Concepts, Methodologies, Tools, and Applications, 2012:200)

To conclude, it seems inevitable that blogging will become even more powerful in the future with more people and businesses recognizing the power of blogging to gain popularity, promote business and communicate.

2.2. Overview of the Weblog Department

As an intern at Menina Design Group, I was put in the media department Weblog which is the center of publicity, content and translation. With 75 blogs and over 10 million readers worldwide, Weblog is a brand that produces, publishes and optimizes

(11)

lifestyle. As an inbound marketing project Weblog can create quality traffic and leads for website to ultimately generate sales and produce results. Thus, Weblog provides the following types of service: graphic design, blogs web design, translation, advertising, content marketing, marketplace.

Picture 2. Weblog logo

Weblog Department deals with three groups of blogs: local and agenda, thematic and brand blogs. The local blogs are oriented towards the market where the project was designed or the product sold. For example, San Francisco or Design New York blog is specifically focused on the USA market, whereas Magasins Deco and Idées Deco Maison are about France. Each of the thematic blogs has its own special theme. For example, the

Best Design Books is about the top books produced about design, Luxury Yachts is a

source for the most luxurious vessels on the water these days, Fashion Design Weeks tells everything about fashion and its events. In addition to such a big variety of blogs, the brands have also their blogs usually with the same names: Boca do Lobo blog, Brabbu

blog.

My role in this company consisted in working as a writer, interpreter, blogger, translator and editor. Some of the most important duties were to translate texts of different type of content in the area of interior design, decor ideas, house decoration, luxury brands, the most expensive homes, travelling and fashion. In the Weblog department I was responsible for three blogs: Modern Home Decor, Best Design Guides, Wohn-design

Trend and Wohnen mit Klassikern and worked as online editor of a luxury interior design

(12)

2.2.1. Modern Home Decor Blog

As a blog, Modern Home Decor is a resource for interior designers, architects, and other design professionals, featuring projects, new products, real-time design industry news, research in decor. Modern Home Decor was created to supply the information about some materials and techniques in interior design and decoration. Besides, it is a tool to offer modern furniture and home decor featuring designs, decor ideas, trends, tendencies and colors. The public audience of the blog includes people from USA, Portugal, Great Britain, Brazil, Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Denmark, etc.

(13)

2.2.2. Best Design Guides Blog

The blog Best Design Guides is the significant resource to find information about design events that take place all over the world. Its main intention relies in conveying to the audience events happening related to the weeks of design and everything involved there.

In addition to this fact, Best Design Guides supplies city guides that are meant to cover all kinds of travelling possibilities for tourists. Moreover, the blog seeks to speak about the cities in which the design or fashion weeks are underway, hotels and resorts to stay, shopping, events that are happening or the best restaurants to eat in the city.

Taking everything into consideration, Best Design Guides provides content for people demanding quality, value and enriching travel experience. With the help of this blog, a reader has an access to updated information in one place.

(14)

2.2.3. Wohnen mit Klassikern Blog

These days over 70% of the world’s population does not speak English and around 45% of the websites worldwide are not in English. (Top Three Benefits of Translating your Blog or Website, 2014) Taking this into account, it may be true to say that having an English-only website is attracting only a little part of population.

One of the obvious benefits of translating the blog is increasing the audience. It allows to start making inroads into that amount of people not speaking English. Keeping in mind that most websites are exclusively in English, there is much less competition for non-English pages. (Top Three Benefits of Translating your Blog or Website, 2014) Thus, the German blog Wohnen mit Klassikern is a chance to increase the amount of followers and readers with the help of translation.

Wohnen mit Klassikern is a blog which deals with design living, providing a

variety of design ideas, trends and products.

(15)

The blog appears to be a resource for design, decoration, home and life. A reader can find information about interesting spaces for living, relaxing and working. The blog also deals with current issues around the house, beauty and fashion trends, projects, interior designers, hotels. In Wohnen mit Klassikern the reader can find information from practical living tips to furnishing ideas and many other useful items. The blog is popular in the following countries: Germany, Portugal, USA, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Brazil, the UK, France, and Romania.

2.2.4. Wohn-Design Trend Blog

Wohn-Design Trend is a German blog about design, interior design, architecture,

fashion and lifestyle. The pages of the blog attract every reader with the information about design brands, their timeless pieces and novelties. The content of the blog is useful for designers, architects and fashion fans because Wohn-Design Trend collects a range of materials regardless of age, ethnicity or status.

(16)

2.2.5. CovetED Magazine

2.3. General characteristics of the internship

Menina Design possesses capacity to complement the training of many young graduates. In the company there is the opportunity for all the interns to become part of the design and get engaged in the sphere of creativity. The trainees are involved in the leading departments depending on their specialties. Some the interns stayed and today belong to the company's staff, others created their own businesses and their brands.

Today the company compiles a list of young entrepreneurs who are making their presence in various branches of design, from furniture, through fashion, to jewelry. These young people are an example of entrepreneurship in Portugal and have a strong passion for design.

Internships are said to develop skills which will help anyone perform better at work later. The company Menina Design Group offers internships to undergraduate and postgraduate students who are required to undertake this work experience placement as a part of their preparation for writing a Master diploma. As it is known, there is a wide range of working conditions within interior design. Thus, the internship was set to last four months from February until May according to the requirements of the University of Minho.

2.4. Fields of activity during the internship

The first part of the internship was spent in getting to know the Weblog department and its activities, as it was suggested by Patricia Pinho, the Head of our Media Department. Thus, a few weeks at the office began with the training. I visited the following departments: Webuzz, Department of Graphic Design, Media Center, Press Office and the main offices of the furniture brands. Therefore, for the first two weeks of the internship a responsible person of each department explained to me the principles of their work and responsibilities, introducing me to other members of the staff and giving me the opportunity to take part in some events of the department. At this part I was more

(19)

as an observer and learned from others. Thanks to this guidance I had the opportunity to enlarge and deepen my view of blogs, media and publicity.

In the following weeks I dealt with plenty of articles and materials to be written, translated and edited most of the time. The time given for the translation depended on the amount of words in the text and type of translation. All the translation materials were collected at the end of the week, except those being done with a specific target.

Moreover, one of my assignments was listening to the interviews with famous interior designers from the world known furniture fairs. The work included writing and editing the source language text from the recorder as later that material was used for translation and submitting in Russian, German or French blogs.

Apart from my major roles and responsibilities, I was involved in the team working on the new luxury interior design magazine CovetED. The issue of translation was also actual here, as the invitation emails in different languages were sent to the readers from many countries.

Besides the work at the office, I did also some interpretations during a variety of fairs and exhibitions Weblog participated in. The necessity to have texts translated into a variety of languages was essential here as well. The editing team of Weblog attended

Maison&Objet in Paris, Isaloni in Milan, Imm Cologne, BDNY, High Point Market and London Design Festival.

2.5. Work conditions

With regards to working hours and conditions, the time schedule of work at Menina Design Group was from 9am till 6:30pm. Two breaks of 15 minutes are at everyone’s disposal at 11am and at 4pm. The lunch break is respected thoroughly from 1pm until 2pm.

The main office occupies a two floor building in Rio Tinto, Porto. The office comprises several rooms, a canteen and a meeting hall. The interns were working at a clean, bright office at the department Weblog.

(20)

One of the benefits of this organization was the learning atmosphere. The environment was really friendly, as energetic and motivated people were working all day to get the biggest amount of knowledge during this useful internship experience. The treatment of this organization was quite professional and all the colleagues were extremely cooperative and helpful. Our leader helped us to find the way in the most difficult situations, always giving advices and finding the most suitable word or phrase for the translation. My colleagues and I had all access to dictionaries and other resources. We were allowed to cooperate with the brand press representatives in need of more information and materials.

However, as compared to the usual working plan, there were quite busy days when the task difficult to do under pressure. The main problem consisted in being given the assignment with the coming deadline and the volume of work was inappropriate to accomplish in time. I found it extremely difficult to concentrate on the translation and interpreting. All of these facts had an influence on the translation and quality of work.

2.6. Work material

According to the main responsibilities in the department Weblog at Menina Design Group, work materials should be appropriate to the principle domains of each blog. It goes without saying that language plays considerable role in this case, as it puts every article into practice and provides content of articles. The interns were supplied with press releases, ebooks, design guides, design catalogues of furniture. The work material for the English-German translation was chosen on the basis of current information and pieces of news at this time. Also, the topics were being searched with regards to the categories and the interests of the blogs’ audience.

After two weeks of training I started to collect the material for translation. The brands of the company usually supplied Weblog department with the press releases written in different languages about their projects from different parts of the world. After translating, the material was eventually published online in the local, thematic and brand

(21)

blogs. It was crucial to be aware of the design collections and all products created by

Boca do Lobo, Brabbu, Koket, Delightfull and others in order to make proper translations.

As a result, I received the following articles to be translated:

¾ Experimental Residential Project Zhukovka 49 counts with Brabbu Design; ¾ Have a look at Christian Greyʼs Apartment;

¾ The most expensive private house of six billions is on sale; ¾ Absolute Style: Ford Mustang 50 Years Limited Edition.

In addition to this, the description of the Vier Jaherszeiten Fairmont Hotel mit

Brabbu Design was also taken for a detailed analysis with the aim to observe and pinpoint

the clear features of language structure, syntactical characteristics and other linguistic points in the German language.

For the development of this project, several translation tools helped in tackling translation problems. The following monolingual and bilingual dictionaries were used: English (Longman and Oxford), German (Beolingus, TU Chemnitz) and Russian (Lexilogos) dictionaries. As for the terminology, corpora such as Linguee, YACHT, Wordlex were checked as well.

Furthermore, machine translation engines served as important tools in the process of translation. Among them the most help used were the translation dictionary Linguee and Babylon Translate, a model of high-speed automated translation technology.

All data translated and collected was carefully checked and analysed during the process of writing the Master internship report by my tutors at the Institute of Arts and Humanities at the University of Minho in Braga, Portugal.

2.7. Work difficulties

During my internship at Menina Design Group, I encountered some difficulties in the working process and translation which include:

• Lack of availability of some colleagues to share their knowledge with interns; In some cases there was a situation when the intern had to solve the translation

(22)

• Lack of attention towards interns during holidays;

In the period of Easter holidays the interns were not give enough attention and they didn’t have access to the sources at the office for their translation activity.

• Defining the equivalence in the target text;

Sometimes I was facing the question of finding the proper equivalence of the target text to the given word of the source text.

• Clear understanding of all furniture products to be translated;

As Menina Design Group is specialized in the interior design, it produces a variety of furniture objects. Thus, it was extremely important to be aware of different types of lamps, tables, sofas, materials and fabrics.

The valuable experience at the design company helped broaden the outlook in the new field of design and was a chance to get useful practice within the translation process of blogs.

(23)

3. ANALYSIS OF THE ENGLISH-GERMAN TRANSLATIONS 3. 1. The Term and the Concept of Translation

Nowadays translation is an activity of enormous importance and an issue of great concern. As a subject of interest, translation matters not only to linguists, professional translators, but also to electronic engineers and mathematicians who write books and articles on translation.

A Scottish linguist I. Catford defines translation as “the replacement of textual material in one language (SL) by equivalent textual material in another language (TL).ˮ The researcher believes that the central problem of translation practice is that of finding TL translation equivalents. (Catford, 1975:20) At the same time Newmark (1988) considers the act of translating to be transferring the meaning of a text between two languages, taking care mainly of the functional relevant meaning.

In translation process the aim consists in reproducing the message. In order to be good at it, a person must make many lexical and grammatical adjustments. For Eugene A. Nida and Charles R. Taber (1982) to translate is to reproduce in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the source language message in terms of meaning and style. (Nida&Taber, 1982:12)

3.2. The English and German languages: difficulties in translating

Before analyzing the English-German translation techniques, it is necessary to contrast structures that caused difficulties in translating.

The English language is the third most common native language in the world. In terms of German, about 95 million people speak German worldwide, and it is the official language of Germany, Austria, parts of Switzerland and Liechtenstein. German and English are closely related and share many common features. Both languages belong to the Germanic branch of the Indo-European language family. However, there are a number

(24)

of aspects of German that commonly interfere with the correct production of English. (Wikipedia, 2015)

In the German language the imperative mood can only occur in the second person, having three main forms: du (informal singular), ihr (informal plural), and Sie (formal singular & plural). The German language has a different imperative structure for each of its three second-person forms ("Sie", "ihr", "du"), as well as first-person plural and third-person commands. (German for English Speakers)

It is also possible to use "lassen" for the second-person plural, corresponding in structure to the English "Let's...." Here the command is actually addressed to one or more people, reflected in the form of "lassen":

Example 1: Lassen Sie uns morgen schwimmen gehen.

Let's go swimming tomorrow.

Have a look at Christian Greyʼs Apartment

Lasst uns einen Blick auf Christian Greyʼs Apartment werfen

Even if the imperative is strange in German, it is possible to find the right equivalent for this grammar construction in the English language. The Imperative mood is the easiest mood to learn in either language, as it only exists in the present tense and the second person.

While translating the article about Christian Greyʼs Apartment, there was an interesting phrase to pay attention to. To put it briefly, the peculiar case of translation with the phrase film running in the cinemas. There are two possible options to say, either underlying the process of the film running in the cinema «Der Film läuft im Kino» or the film began running in the cinema «der Film läuft an».

Example 2: The most anticipated film of the year is already next week, running on

Valentine's Day, in the cinemas.

Der am meisten erwartete Film des Jahres läuft schon nächste Woche am Valentinstag in den Kinos an.

The word genau is one of the most common words in the German language. In fact, German people are saying genau everywhere, using this word to confirm

(25)

Example 3: ‘Leberkäse ist weder Leber noch Käse.’ … ‘Genau!’.

Moreover, lately Germans started using it to indicate agreement. In business meetings genau is used to confirm understanding, as in the following examples:

Example 4: ‘Entweder bezahlst du deine Taxirechnung jetzt oder kommst ins

Gefängnis.’ … ‘Genau!’

Besides, among friends it is possible to hear like in the following example:

Example 5: ‘Magst du immer noch Anchovis auf der Pizza?’ … ‘Genau!’ (The

Greatness of Genau, oder…?, 2009)

While translating, there happened to be the case with word genau in German translation.

Example 6: And that's what we will do today. Genau das werden wir heute tun.

In this case of the translation, done for the German blog Wohn-design trend,

genau was used with a meaning exactly, precisely, emphasizing and explaining to readers

the purpose of that article.

One of the main obstacles facing in translation from English into German was a word order. As a complex aspect of language, the word order of the German language seems to be more flexible, but strict. Within the translation process it was seen the following features of word order in the German language that do not exist in English:

• the main verb was the second element in the independent clause, requiring an inversion of subject and verb.

Example 7: Jetzt ist es auch möglich, ein Blick ins Innere der Wohnung von Christian Grey zu werfen.

Now it is also possible to look inside of Christian Grey's apartment.

• the main verb (e.g. as past participle) was the last element in the independent clause. Example 8: Haben Sie schon von diesem Film gehört?

Have you already heard about this film?

• the finite verb was the last element in the dependent clause.

(26)

Here is the first screen, from where you can explore the whole apartment.

The other peculiar feature about the German language was compounding. In German compounds are formed by joining words, and in addition filler letters can be inserted or letters can be removed from the end of all except the last word of a compound. (Langer, 1998) While dealing with the translation I found making compounds in German complicated in terms of using the right filler letter. Some examples of compounds from the English-German translation can be seen below:

Example 10: der Hausbesitzer (das Haus + der Besitzer) - owner;

das Leistungspaket (die Leistung + das Packet) - performance packet; das Küchenset (die Küche + das Set)- kitchen set

More examples of compounds are listed in a glossary created on the basis of the translated material.

3.3. Semantic Analysis of Translation Processes

As a sub-discipline of linguistics, semantics focuses on the study of meaning. It tries to understand what meaning is as an element of language and how it is constructed by language as well as interpreted, obscured and negotiated by speakers and listeners of language.

Some German verbs present some problems in meaning. Within the translation process, there were observed some clear examples of difference in meaning between the words used in the same sentences in both English and German languages.

Example 11: In 1912 King George V and Queen Mary stayed in Wentworth. 76

rooms were prepared for the Royal Visit.

Im Jahr 1912 übernachteten König Georg V und Königin Mary in Wentworth. 76 Zimmer wurden für den königlichen Besuch vorbereitet.

In the example showed above, the verb «stay» cannot be substituted with «bleiben». In this context the verb has a meaning to remain in a particular place, whereas the king lived and was sleeping in this building. Thus, the verb «wohnen» or even better

(27)

In the following example below, it is possible to see that it is not advisable to translate word for word in this case, providing the word «limitiert» which is the past participle of the verb «limitieren». On the contrary, it is better to translate with the word «begrenzt» with the synonym «beschränkt».

Example 12: Limited to just 1,964 examples, the rear-wheel drive coupes are

based on the all-new 2015 Mustang GT fastback with performance pack.

Die auf nur 1,964 Exemplare begrenzten Hinterradantrieb Coupés basieren auf den komplett neuen 2015 Mustang GT Fastback mit Leistungspaket.

Besides that case, in the sentence in the example above the English original version of the word example means a model, a copy, a car as an object, indicating the variety of the things. To use here the word Beispiel is not quite suitable, as it is more used in the German expression «zum Beispiel». The word «Exemplare» is a better option here as it has a meaning of a copy and specimen.

In the other example, «sein» was changed in the translation on «ausgestattet

kommen» in order to emphasize that the model of the car was provided with a special

manual. Also, in this sentence the adjective «optional» was substituted on «wahlweise», stressing that the car may be provided with a special additional service.

Example 13: Ford has unveiled the 2015 Mustang GT 50 Year Limited Edition.

The special model can be equipped with an optional automatic or a six-speed manual. Ford hat den 2015 Mustang GT 50 Jahre Limited Edition enthüllt. Das Sondermodell kann wahlweise mit einem automatischen oder einem Sechsgang-Schaltgetriebe ausgestattet kommen.

3. 4. Translation techniques used in English-German Translation

In the 1950s two French scholars Jean-Paul Vinay and Jean Darbelnet explored the linguistic aspects of translation. They claimed there are seven main procedures at work during translation: borrowing, calque, literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalence and adaptation. Among all of them four procedures (adaptation, equivalence,

(28)

where it is difficult to render some stylistic effects without disturbing the syntactic or lexical order. (Vinay and Darbelnet, 1995)

According to Dictionary of Translation Studies, calque is a term used to denote the process whereby the individual elements of an SL item are translated literally to produce a TL equivalent. (Dictionary of Translation Studies, 1997:18)

Vinay and Jean Darbelnet characterise transposition as the process of replacing one word class with another without changing the meaning of the message. There are obligatory and optional types of transposition. (Vinay and Darbelnet 1995:36)

The procedure opposite to transposition is modulation. This process involves a manipulation of mental rather than grammatical categories. In other words, it varies the form of the message, obtained by a change in the point of view. (Vinay and Darbelnet, 1995:36)

Translation equivalence is used to describe the nature and the extent of the relationships which exist between SL and TL texts or smaller linguistic units (Dictionary of Translation Studies, 1997:49). Catford J. C. believes that translation equivalence occurs when SL and TL items are relatable to “the sameˮ feature of substances. Newmark P. (1988), in his book A Textbook of Translation, makes some important points about functional and descriptive equivalent. As a matter of fact, functional equivalent is the process of translating a word in the source language/text with a functionally equivalent target language word (i.e. a word which has the same meaning). In terms of a descriptive

equivalent, this common procedure is used to neutralise or generalise a SL cultural word

by using a description. (Newmark, 1988:83)

Newmark also determines compensation to occur when loss of meaning, sound-effect or pragmatic sound-effect in one part of a sentence is compensated in another one. The reverse procedure is reduction. (Newmark, 1988:90)

The ʻfreestʼ form of translation may be called adaptation, used mainly for plays and poetry. (Dictionary of Translation Studies, 1997:3) Vinay and Darbelnet understand adaptation as the technique to replace a situation of the SL by an analogous situation of the TL.

(29)

In the process of translation in the company Menina Design Group the articles from the blogs Wohnen mit klassikern, Wohn-design Trend and the luxury magazine

CovetED, it was concluded that most of all the following techniques were used:

adaptation, transposition, reduction, transference and equivalence.

The cases of transference were seen while rendering the name of the film:

Example 14: One of the owners was the inspiration for Mr. Darcy from the film Pride and Prejudice.

Einer der Hausbesitzer inspirierte die Figur des Mr.Darcy aus dem Film Pride and

Prejudice.

At the same time the names of the brands Delightfull and Brabbu, their products were directly transferred into the target text without changes. Thus, a coffee table Lallan, armchairs Inca and Sika were not changed in the texts. What is more, adaptation was also involved, as coffee table was translated into der Couchtisch, showing that there is a difference of defining table in both languages.

Example 15: The pieces chosen from BRABBU collection were:

¾ A coffee table LALLAN, made with four different materials;

¾ An armchair INCA made in velvet and its legs in ebony wood veneer with glossy varnish;

¾ An armchair SIKA with golden polished details and legs in high gloss black lacquer.

Folgende Stücke wurde aus der BRABBU Sammlung ausgewählt: ¾ der Couchtisch Lallan, aus vier verschiedenen Materialien;

¾ der Sessel Inca aus Samt und die Beine des Sessels in Ebenholzfurnier mit Hochglanzlack;

¾ der Sessel Sika mit den goldenen polierten Details und die in schwarzem Hochglanz lackierten Beine.

Besides, the next sentence had a couple of techniques used at once. It is possible to emphasize the case of reduction, where the long English phrase of the original is substituted by the compound das Küchenset.

(30)

Folgende DelightFULL Stücke wurden ausgewählt: zwei Brubeck Wandlampen und eine Brubeck Pendelleuchte für das Küchenset.

Moreover, in this example Suspension Lamp was changed with the help of the equivalent das Pendelleuchte in the German language. Concerning equivalence, there were other cases with this technique.

Example 17: Zhukovka 49 was an experimental project by Russian Architectural

bureau PH.D founded in 2003 by Lana Grineva in Moscow.

Zhukovka 49 war ein experimentelles Projekt des russischen Architekturbüros PH.D, das 2003 von Lana Grineva in Moskau gegründet wurde.

Except these structures, it was quite obvious to pinpoint the notion of transposition in some sentences. For instance, legs in high gloss black lacquer was translated with the help of the German grammar construction die in schwarzem Hochglanz lackierten Beine. Here the German language has a long pre-nominal participle construction where all the characteristics of the legs are identified.

The other clear example of transposition is clearly seen in the following translation:

Example 18: The requirements for the project challenged the design team.

Die Anforderungen, die dem Projekts gestellt wurden, waren gleichzeitig eine groβe

Herausforderung für das Design-Team.

In this case the verb challenged was rendered into the target text with the help of more complicated structure, consisting of the verb form with the noun.

At the same time there were some cases of paraphrase, where the Gerund part was substituted with the adjective and noun collocation in a German phrase. The following example may prove this:

Example 19: What was required here was the fully redesigning of the interior of a

mansion house with an area of 1,200m² in a short time period and with a strict budget due to the requirement of placing it rapidly on the market.

Die Herausforderung dieses Projekts bestand darin, eine komplett neue Gestaltung des Innenraums eines Herrenhauses mit einer Fläche von 1.200 m² in einer sehr

(31)

The other cases of calque were noticed in a couple of sentences all over the translation of the texts from the English into German languages as well:

Example 20: Experimental residential project Zhukovka 49 counts with Brabbu design Experimentelles Wohnprojekt Zhukovka 49 mit Brabbu Design

Example 21: Zhukovka 49 was an experimental project by Russian Architectural bureau PH.D founded in 2003 by Lana Grineva in Moscow.

Zhukovka 49 war ein experimentelles Projekt des russischen Architekturbüros

PH.D, das 2003 von Lana Grineva in Moskau gegründet wurde.

To sum up, every language has its own structure, rules, style, cultural characteristics and features. In view of this, while doing a translation, it is crucial to pay attention to this and make everything possible to create the target text at the highest level of translation.

(32)

CONCLUSION

In accordance with the aims outlined at the beginning of the report, the present analysis was intended as a contribution to the understanding of translation as a form of advertising and the specific translation procedures of the blog material.

In the first part of this report the concept of the company and department Weblog was illustrated, working conditions and work material for translation. The second part was devoted to the analysis of the English-German translations. Some words were hard to translate only if one wishes to remain in the same grammatical category. The words that are truly difficult to translate were often the small, common words. In the process of translating texts of the blogs from English into German, there were revealed some peculiar issues to be discussed:

- imperative mood in English and German languages; - word order and compounds;

- syntactic structure of the original; - semantic analysis of the meaning;

- direct/indirect techniques used in translation.

During the internship I was given practical experience relevant to the course of study and also put in the work environment to gain practical knowledge in a range of professional duties and supervised by professional staff in the company.

To sum up, the aim of the report consisted in identifying the dominant translation strategies, problems, defining the main difference and common features while dealing with translation of two languages.

The internship at the Menina Design Group gave me good professional experience. Furthermore, I learned significantly about blogs, publicity, its practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, skills as well as the instruments, objects and how important are the processes of knowledge transfer, research and other. Working on my own and with other colleagues gave me deeper understanding and appreciation of the translation process, strategies and techniques. I became aware of the importance of a pleasant, positive atmosphere in the company to achieve good results in my work. The

(33)

four-month intensive training in Weblog has opened my eyes to the translation problems as well as the changes which must be done to improve the target text. Moreover, to do an internship at the Menina Design Group has motivated me to continue working diligently as well as to further my studies in order to contribute greatly to the development of my translation skills and abilities.
