WREN — That’s right. More than four thousand pictures of the corner of Third Street and Seventh Avenue at eight o’clock in the morning, four thousand straight days in all kinds of weather. That’s why I can never take a vacation. I got to be in my spot every morning at the same time … every morning in the same spot at the same time. “People say you have to travel to see the world,” Auggie says. “Sometimes I think that if you just stay in one place and keep your eyes open, you’re going to see just about all that you can handle.” When a friend comments that all the snapshots look alike, Auggie points out the differences: the light, the season, and the look on people’s faces. It’s all a matter of slowing down.

TWO THOUSAND LIGHT YEARS FROM HOME, PIETRO MATTIOLLI, 2012
https://vimeo.com/54015740
«Mattioli, a new father at the time, photographed a series of objects — fences, light posts, trees, each lit solely by a burst of flash—while strolling at night through his yard and along near-by streets. His meanderings, taken while his child slept, were constrained near-by the radius of his baby-monitor reception. The light-pink cover of the book is deceptively plain, with the title type marching around the cover’s perimeter much as Mattioli circumnavigated his neighborhood. The volume offers a completely non-narrative collection of images. The conceptual thread and the unusual material structure of the book hold it all together: a father, with a flashlight, seeking out and illuminating the things that lurk in the night.»

THIS WORLD AND OTHERS LIKE IT, DREW NIKONOWICZ, 2019
https://vimeo.com/379303896
«I don’t think we need to look into the future to find alternate realities. We already have access to an uncountable amount through entertainment, virtual reality simulations, rover & probe-based imagery and more. Part of navigating the real vs virtual is to suggest that they are one in the same. One cannot exist without the other, and they’re interchangeable in our daily lives. Our actions and experiences within virtual spaces now have clear and measurable impact on our physical ‘real’ lives – and vice versa. We are constantly moving beyond the present state of things into these alternate realities.»

PRIMAL MOUNTAIN, YUJI HAMADA, 2019
https://vimeo.com/381155407
«In March 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred. Afterwards, everyday life quaked in the unreliable information that was being released. The information that was broadcast by the media, the information that we received, didn’t match up to the reality that was before our eyes. Around that time, one of my good friends sent me a postcard with a photo of beautiful Swiss mountains. It was so picturesque that the more I looked at the photo the more it started to look unreal, to the point that my brain started to register it as a two-dimensional drawing. I thought about how a photograph, which is meant to capture 3D aspects of the world, is perceived as something two-dimensional.»
