Saudações!
Feliz Natal Pequenino!

Greetings!
Happy little Christmas! In many parts of the world, especially Spanish speaking places, today’s feast of the Epiphany is referred to as little Christmas and is the day on which gifts are exchanged. That makes sense, as it is the celebration of the arrival of the Magi in Bethlehem when they offered the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the Christ child. We often speak of three Wise Men or Kings yet there is no mention of a number of visitors. Matthew does not tell us the exact number of astrologers who came to offer homage and gifts to the infant Christ. In fact there was an ancient religion of the time known as Zoroastrianism practiced in Persia. In that faith there were wise or learned men known as Magi. The tradition that there were three comes from the fact that three gifts were offered to the Lord: gold, frankincense and myrrh. Nor does Matthew ever tell us that they were kings. That tradition comes from the prophecy of Isaiah 60 (which we heard in our first reading) and Psalm 72 (which was today's responsorial psalm). From early on, Christians saw a foreshadowing of the Epiphany event in these two passages from the Old Testament. And as for their names being Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar--that idea is rooted in a tradition that goes back at least to the sixth century. But it was not a part of Matthew's description of the magi as found in his Gospel. In reflection on what gift we might offer to a child of about two years of age it should seem odd to give these three gifts, yet they were gifts with great meaning. Gold is a gift that is worthy of a king, as Jesus is. Frankincense is a gift worthy of a priest as he offers prayers to God, as Jesus does. Myrrh is an odd gift as it is a resin used in the embalming of a body. As such it foretells some-thing about the death of Christ and is perhaps another reminder to Mary that she would experience the sorrow of her son’s death.
On the evening before the Epiphany, traditionally there were prayers, blessed dried herbs would be burnt and their aromatic smell would fill the house. Doorways would be sprinkled with holy water and the master of the house would write with chalk C + M + B and the current year (2016) above the door and say: "Caspar, Melchior, Balthazar, protect us again this year from the dangers of fire and water.” C + M + B has traditionally been translated with Caspar,
Melchior and Balthazar; however, according to the Church it stands for "Christus Mansionem Benedictat" (Christ bless
this home).
Blessing for the Home on the Feast of the Epiphany*
Chalk and a traditional prayer of blessing are available, one per family please, at the doors of the church. When completed the marks should look like this
20+C+M+B+16
.You can look above the main door of the rectory to get an idea of how it should appear.
One Christmas I was reminded by my brother of the best gift we had ever received:
“the greatest gift of all, Mom’s hugs and kisses.” I wish I could have just one more of each!

Epiphany of the Lord (Cycle C)
An "epiphany" is an appearance. In today's readings, with their rising stars, splendorous lights and mysteries re-vealed, the face of the child born on Christmas day ap-pears.
Herod, in today's Gospel, asks the chief priests and scribes where the Messiah is to be born. The answer Mat-thew puts on their lips says much more, combining two strands of Old Testament promise - one revealing the Messiah to be from the line of David (see 2 Samuel 2:5), the other predicting "a ruler of Israel" who will "shepherd his flock" and whose "greatness shall reach to the ends of the earth" (see Micah 5:1-3).
Those promises of Israel's king ruling the nations resound also in today's Psalm. The psalm celebrates David's son, Solomon. His kingdom, we sing, will stretch "to the ends of the earth," and the world's kings will pay Him homage. That's the scene too in today's First Reading, as nations stream from the East, bearing "gold and frankincense" for Israel's king.
The Magi's pilgrimage in today's Gospel marks the fulfill-ment of God's promises. The Magi, probably Persian as-trologers, are following the star that Balaam predicted would rise along with the ruler's staff over the house of Jacob (see Numbers 24:17).
Laden with gold and spices, their journey evokes those made to Solomon by the Queen of Sheba and the "kings
of the earth" (see 1 Kings 10:2,25; 2 Chronicles 9:24).
Interestingly, the only other places where frankincense and myrrh are mentioned together are in songs about Sol-omon (see Song of Songs 3:6, 4:6,14).
One greater than Solomon is here (see Luke 11:31). He has come to reveal that all peoples are "co-heirs" of the royal family of Israel, as today's Epistle teaches. His man-ifestation forces us to choose: Will we follow the signs that lead to Him as the wise Magi did? Or will we be like those priests and the scribes who let God's words of promise become dead letters on an ancient page?
