A COLUNA DE PADRE JEFF

Quando uma criança ou um adulto vai ser baptizado, deve ter pelo menos um padrinho. Normalmente, as crianças têm dois padrinhos – onde um deve ser do sexo masculino e o outro feminino. Confirme com a lei da Igreja (Cânone 874), padrinhos devem: (a) ser católicos, (b) ter pelo menos 16 anos de idade, (c) ter sido baptizado, confirmado e receber a comunhão regularmente, e (d) estar vivendo uma vida consistente com seus próprios votos baptismais.

Em outras palavras, devem ser praticando a fé, não deveriam estar se envolvindo em pecado notório, e devem apoiar a Igreja e a fé católica. Se um padrinho é casado, o casamento deve ser reconhecido pela Igreja. Em geral, se um padrinho potencial não for membro da paróquia onde foi baptizado, ele ou ela deve obter um Certificado (Sponsor Certificate) de seu próprio pastor da sua propria paroquia, que afirma aos requisitos previamente escritos.

Às vezes pessoas se opõem a estes requisitos. Eles discutem que os pais devem ter liberdade para escolher os padrinhos de sua criança que será baptizada. Contudo, devemos compreender que o baptismo não é um ato privado. É uma liturgia pública e oficial da Igreja que recebe alguém na Igreja Católica. Portanto, a Igreja tem o dever e obrigação de exigir critérios razoáveis para ser um padrinho. O padrinho ajuda os pais e a criança a viver uma vida católica. Para isso, o padrinho precisa fornecer um bom exemplo de como viver essa vida.

Se há só um padrinho católico, a lei da Igreja permite a nomeação duma testemunha cristã para a cerimônia de baptismo.

Essa testemunha deve ser um cristão, não católico, baptizado, e justo. Esta testemunha cristã participa da cerimônia, mas tecnicamente não é um padrinho. Um ex-católico, um não- batizado, ou alguém que não vive uma vida cristã virtuosa, nunca pode ser uma testemunha cristã.

CAMPANHA DE ROUPAS DE INVERNO PARA CRIANÇAS No mês de Outubro, a Sociedade de São Vicente de Paulo e os Cavaleiros de Colombo vão colectar roupa de inverno - casacos, chapéus, luvas, cachecois, e camisolas para crianças da pre-escola até 6 ^o grau que frequentam diferentes escolas em Fall River.

Podemos aceitar roupas usadas que estejam em boas condições e limpas. No passado, aceitamos roupas para adultos, mas queremos especificamente só roupas para crianças. As caixas para esta campanha estarão à entrada da Igreja em breve.

UNITED INTERFAITH ACTION (UIA) ASSEMBLY After collecting concerns of parishioners and prioritizing these issues, please join with other faith communities for the United Interfaith Action Assembly on Wednesday, September 26 at 7 PM at the School Hall at St. Mary’s Cathedral. YOUTH-FAITH FORMATION FR. JEFF’S COLUMN

When a child or an adult is to be baptized, he or she must have at least one godparent or sponsor. Usually, children have two godparents, where one must be male and the other fe- male. According to Church law (Canon 874), godparents must:

(a) be Catholic, (b) be at least 16 years old or older, (c) have been baptized, confirmed and receive Communion regularly, and (d) must be living a life consistent with their own baptismal vows.

In others words, they must be practicing the faith, cannot be engaging in notorious sin, and support the Church and the Catholic faith. If a sponsor is married, their marriage must be recognized by the Church. In general, if a potential godparent is not a member of the parish where they were baptized, he or she must obtain a sponsor certificate from their own pastor which affirms that they meet the above requirements.

People sometimes object to the requirements for a spon- sor. They argue that parents should have freedom to choose the sponsor of a child who is to be baptized. However, we must real- ize that baptism is not a private act. It is a public, official liturgy of the Church and welcomes someone into the Catholic Church.

Therefore, the Church has the duty and obligation to require rea- sonable criteria for being a sponsor. The sponsor is to assist the parents and the child in living a Catholic life. In order to do so, the sponsor needs to provide good example of living that life.

If there is one Catholic godparent, Church law does per- mit the appointment of one Christian witness to the baptism cere- mony. This witness must be a baptized, upright, non-Catholic Christian. This Christian witness takes part in the ceremony but technically is not a godparent. A former Catholic, a non-baptized person, or someone who does not live a virtuous Christian life can never be a Christian witness.

CAMPAIGN TO COLLECT CHILDREN’S WINTER OUTERWEAR

During the month of October, the Fall River District of St. Vincent de

Paul Society and the Knights of Columbus will be collecting winter

coats, hats, mittens, scarves and sweatshirts for school-aged children in

pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. We can accept any gently used

clean items. In the past, we have accepted adult clothing, but we specifi-

cally want children clothes only. Boxes will be set up at the entrance of

the church soon.
