B
eja is an oasis of history and
tranquillity. In the heart of
the Alentejo plain, history and
gastronomy play a crucial role. Historical
records show that this region was
already inhabited during the Bronze Age.
In 48 B.C., the Roman Emperor Julius
Caesar named the region as “Pax Julia”
(the peace of Julius) and came to declare
it the capital town. Beja was the stage of
many conquests and reconquests. A tour
through the oldest streets of the city
is a journey through its history.
OUT
During the Roman domain,
Beja was called “Pax Julia”,
in celebration of the pacification
of Lusitania territory.
Taking off a few days in Beja
means getting in contact with History
and Nature in the heart of tranquil
Alentejo Region. Allow yourself to grab all
the time in the world. Even the popular
songs are calmly performed.
Take the advantage and relax to the
maximum, take long walks over the grape
fields to see the wine cellars. Perhaps
reaching the very beautiful coast you will
discover the few deserted and almost
secret beaches, classified among the
most beautiful in Portugal.

The good cuisine of the Alentejo Region is
served in good regional earthenware.
The fine Açorda Soup, made with
the irreplaceable Alentejo bread, the
game dishes or the Lamb Stew are the
highlights that will stir and open the
appetite of the most demanding guests.
All dishes are scented with coriander. In
this region, where wheat was once seen
as a king, in today’s gastronomy
still reveals aromatic surprises.
