A Tribute to those who help us to build the ield of Administration in Brazil

Scieniic journals, conferences of the Naional Associaion of Post-Graduaion and Research in Administraion (ANPAD), as well as other important conferences in Brazil and abroad are essenial for the social construcion of knowledge and for building our ield of study. In the work of producing excellent research, promoing academic debates and dedicaing to educate peo-ple, there are those who we – as researchers and graduate professors – consider fundamental in the ield of Administraion in Brazil. They are indispensable professors and colleagues, and true friends.

In this editorial, we have dedicated a secion to express our graitude to two professionals who reired from the insituion in 2016, but who will fortunately and undoubtedly, be with us for a long ime – Prof. Dr. Carlos Osmar Bertero and Prof. Dr. Maria Ester de Freitas.

Carlos Osmar Bertero, Professor and former director of FGV EAESP, President of ANPAD, Head of Department, Editor for the Journal of Business Administraion from FGV EAESP (RAE), researcher and author. Beyond the several other itles and roles obtained and performed in his outstanding career, Professor Bertero has contributed with his wisdom and friendship during the last 40 years or more for the construcion of the ield of administraion.

Maria Ester de Freitas, Professor, Head of Department of FGV EAESP, researcher, author, friend, educator – among those she taught, are now recognized researchers and professors.

In order to express our recogniion in the best way possible, we invited colleagues who bring a deep knowledge about our honorees. So, we entrust this task to Professor Maria José Tonelli, who served as Deputy Director of FGV EAESP for many years and is current editor of RAE; and to Rafael Alcadipani, Professor at the Department of General Administraion and Human Resources FGV EAESP.

Recognizing the importance of these two disinguished scholars, Cadernos EBAPE.BR goes beyond being a journal open to crit-ical studies, to high quality debate and to the democraic expression of ideas. We want to encourage others to follow these professionals’ example, which guides us to improve coninuously as professors, researchers, ciizens, educators.

It is a happy coincidence that this issue ofers aricles about organizaional culture in creaive industries, in organizaions linked to religion, football and on the theme of solidarity economy, as well as bringing an aricle addressing the history of the Administraion Field in Brazil and the role of Business Schools. Coincidence because Prof. Bertero and Prof. Maria Ester are among the irst authors in Brazil to address the issue of organizaional culture, wriing books and numerous essenial aricles on this subject since the 90s. Both relected on the publicaion of aricles, and the quality of research – in Administraion and historical analysis – on the construcion of our ield of study, issues that are important to us all, and which are also addressed within this ediion of Caderons EBAPE.BR.

We hope you enjoy the aricles of this issue and the messages to honor Professors Bertero and Maria Ester who we invite to remain close, contribuing to the ield.

The Brazilian academia in Administraion, oicially established with ANPAD in 1976, has grown because of the pioneer-ing work of many professors and researchers from various ields, in various insituions throughout Brazil (FACHIN, 2006). Certainly, we would have much to say about the role played by diferent explorers and invenive professors, people ahead of their ime. In this short message, in paricular, we pay tribute to Carlos Osmar Bertero and Maria Ester de Freitas, both professors at FGV EAESP for a long period of ime, reirees of the insituion in 2016 and, fortunately, not going far from the texts and wriing. Each, in their own way and as few others, have contributed to teaching and research in the ield of Administraion in Brazil.

The history of Administraion teaching in Brazil is based on spreading of American management models ater the war, as shown by Professor Bertero (2006) in Ensino e Pesquisa em Administração, a brief but extremely useful work for

under-standing the major events that have marked this process in Brazil. Professor Bertero not only wrote about but acively paricipated in this history, paricipaing in the creaion of ANPAD where he served as President on diferent occasions. In 2016, together with Prof. Tania Fischer, he celebrated 50 years in this important insituion. Bertero was present in numer-ous debates on teaching and research in business administraion in Brazil. Within FGV EAESP, the insituion where he worked throughout his life, he held academic and administraive roles that supported the development of the academic ield in Administraion. As editor of the journal RAE, role that Bertero took on at diferent imes, he wrote editorials that are living memory of those days, as well as numerous aricles. His educaion includes a Degree in Philosophy from USP (University of São Paulo), an MBA from Michigan State University and a PhD in Business from Cornell University where he was supervised by Prof. Bill Starbuck, one of the most fruiful scholars in our ield in the US. Bertero brings strong analyical thinking, an excepional memory, a unique Briish humor and is strongly grounded on the facts. This last feature is what makes all of us to look to Professor Bertero for advice when we need pracical suggesions for complex issues. Bertero is a great observer of everyday life, microsociology and the great events of the economy and naional and internaional policy. Bertero connected many young researchers who had the opportunity to socialize to research and work with him. He is a person who is open to learn from everyone. Like the dear professor Fernando Prestes Mota was the advisor of Maria Ester de Freitas, Bertero played this role for Flávio Carvalho de Vasconcellos, Miguel Pinto Caldas and Thomaz Wood Jr. and many others who sill paricipate with innovaive and provocaive papers in the summits of the Naional Associaion of Post-Graduaion and Research in Administraion, ENANPADs.

Bertero coninuously supported intriguing projects, such as “Produção Cieníica em Administração” or the construcion of ‘management’ in Brazil (BERTERO, CALDAS and WOOD JR., 1999; ALCADIPANI and BERTERO, 2012). Always elegant, Bertero uses his knowledge to ground provocaive ideas. Bertero’s character is formed by all these elements, inspiring to academia and to life. Many students say he is the “muse” of Organizaional Studies and his grandchildren call him “grandpa-google”. Professor Bertero’s history is intertwined with the history of the construcion of the academic ield of Administraion in Brazil.

in the areas of Organizaional Theory and Business Strategy. His aricles reveal a proliic author who writes about various topics and approaches since the 1960s. For example, in 1967, in an aricle published in the journal RAE, the Professor was discussing the issue of underdevelopment and stagnaion in Lain America and relecing on theory of organizaions in underdeveloped socieies (the relecions on the theory of organizaions are in the aricle “Teoria das Organizações

em Sociedades Subdesenvolvidas”, which was republished in 1992).

Maria Ester de Freitas is a mixture of reason and emoion that really inspires people around her. During her masters at FGV EAESP she was advised by professor Bertero, but her academic life was disrupively changed by the contact with Fernando Prestes Mota, her doctorate advisor at the same insituion. Although a philosopher with French-based train-ing, as well as almost all scholars in the Brazilian Philosophy, Bertero always had his support in the American model of educaion, because of his masters and doctorate atended in the United States. Maria Ester, inspired by Prestes Mota, plunged into French-origin microsociology. Eugene Enriquez, with whom she studied in France on several occasions, has great inluence on the academic contribuion of Maria Ester.

Everyone knows Maria Ester, deinitely one of the biggest names in Brazilian academy in Organizaional Studies. She was also a pioneer in Brazil in research on Organizaional Culture, Moral Harassment and Diversity. Maria Ester is pure pas-sion when she writes, while her texts are disinguished by the clarity and accuracy of the message. Works such as “Viva

a tese”, or ‘long live the thesis’ show – from the itle – her way of living and building academia. For her, we are here to

live what we study and study what we live. Maria Ester taught and innovated in subjects at undergraduate and gradu-ate courses in Administraion. She supervised over 10 masters dissertaions and over 15 doctorgradu-ate thesis. Her students are working all over Brazil teaching in leading insituions such as UNB (University of Brasilia), FGV EBAPE and UFRGS (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul). Maria Ester always encouraged students to innovate and through her students’ work she managed to bring fundamental contribuions to our ield such as the debate on LGBT people in the workplace. Although atached to the tradiion of French social psychology, Maria Ester also knows the American academia in Administraion, having atended part of her masters at New York University (NYU). In the aricle published in 1991, she rescues and criically discusses the concept of organizaional culture based on American literature. That same year, the book “Cultura Organizacional: formação, ipologias e impacto” was published, which is a landmark in the history of Professor Maria Ester as well as in the history of Brazilian Organizaional Studies. In her book Maria Ester brings a thor-ough review of all aspects of organizaional culture, something unheard of in Brazil. In her work “Cultura Organizacional: idenidade, sedução e carisma”, published in 1999, Professor Maria Ester develops a consistent criicism of the then “fad” of corporate culture.

The fruitful partnership of Maria Ester and Fernando Motta yielded several articles and books. “Vida Psíquica e

Organizações”, a collecion they organized together, discusses the subjecivity invariably present in organizaions and

reveals that Maria Ester, and Fernando Mota, found intriguing explanaions for the complex world of organizaions in psychoanalyical concepts.

Professor Maria Ester produced exciing and unconvenional work as the relecive and paricipatory work on research-ers in Antarcica (before the ire) and in partnresearch-ership with her great friend Marcelo Dantas, organized the compilaion “Diversidade Sexual e Trabalho”, foreseeing many of the current debates about diversity and generaing social impact on a mater of extreme importance to Brazil. Maria Ester argues that reirement is not a “living death”, but a moment of important passage for us all. The way she deals with the topic should be an inspiraion for everyone.

1. Possibiliies of incorporaing Norman Fairclough’s criical discourse analysis into the study of organizaions, Everton Rodrigues da Silvaand Carlos Alberto Gonçalves:the authors address the existence of an epistemo-logical gap in work on discourse analysis applied to management. Their aim is to present alternaives in order to merge organizaional studies and the criical discourse analysis (CDA) of Norman Fairclough, which under-stands organizaions as ideological and discursive eniies and exposes the relaionship between ideology, hege-mony and discourse.

2. The noion of culture in contemporary studies of Organizaional Learning in Brazil: unfolding the network by using literary inscripion,Bruno Luiz Américo, Fagner Carniel and Leícia Dias Faninel: the aricle describes and analyzes how certain concepions of culture have been addressed in the subject of Organizaional Learning, which is embedded in the ield of Organizaional Learning and Knowledge Management. The authors used the noion of “literary inscripion” as a methodological principle for the analysis of intellectual networks in naional research on the process of knowledge acquisiion in organizaions.

3. Organizaional Values and Work Values: a study with call center operators, Kely César Marins de Paiva and Michelle Regina Santana Dutra: the authors invesigate the coniguraion of organizaional and work values pre-sented by operators of a call center in Belo Horizonte (MG), which is an environment permeated by idiosyncra-sies. The analysis was conducted through descripive ield research, with quanitaive and qualitaive approaches, featuring a methodological triangulaion. The data collected in 399 quesionnaires received staisical treatment; and data from 22 interviews were submited to the technique of content analysis. Thus, there was a predom-inance of the value “compliance” within the organizaional values. This can be explained by the fact that this type of organizaion is recognized by rewarding the respect of predeined rules, aitudes and behavior models.

4. Poliical risk and companies’ internaionalizaion: a literature review,Luiz Paulo da Silva Costa and Ariane Crisina Roder Figueira: the aricle provides an analysis onhow the naional and internaional literature has explored variables that impact the percepion of poliical risk within a company’s internaionalizaion process. The dis-cussion presents the ideniicaion of poliical, economic and socio-cultural variables that can be quaniied in future studies and enable to establish a risk miigaion and achieving success in the internaionalizaion process.

5. Background of undergraduate courses in administraion in Brazil: the schools of commerce and the higher educaion courses in administraion and inance, Amon Barros: the aricle shows a historical narraive about the development of Schools of Commerce and the graduate courses in Administraion and Finance in Brazil. Through historical analysis, the author provides an overview of the educaional structure established in the country in the period before the irst graduate courses in Administraion, created in 1952. As a conclusion of the study, the importance of knowing the insituions that pre-existed insituions of Higher Educaion in Administraion is evidenced, as well as the importance of deepening the discussions on the transmission and producion of knowledge in Administraion in Brazil.

6. Corporate brand building from the corporate stories perspecive: a Brazilian football teams study,Edson Roberto Scharf, Francisco Giovanni David Vieira, Richard Perassi Luiz de Souza and Edimar Russi invesigate the contents of corporate stories about Brazilian football clubs and how these stories are used to promote organi-zaional image and brands related to the company.

argues that subcontracing or outsourcing – known in Brazil as terceirização – reinforces the relaions of dom-inaion and social control over the labor force, lowering or removing rights historically achieved.

8. Human resource management in creaive industries: the case of Brazilian animaion studios,Marta Corrêa Machado and André Luiz Fischer: the authors aim to understand the management of people in the creaive industries through the study of one of its segments, the animaion studios. Staring from the concept of Chaston (2008) creaive industry as the meeing between business and culture, the authors observed that the dilemma between arisic achievement and business objecives was also present in this segment. The aricle seeks a deeper understanding of how this dilemma is relected in people management operaion in these Brazilian stu-dios. In order to conduct this work, the authors used qualitaive research through case studies in four naional producion companies.

9. Atracion and retenion of people for religious life in Catholic religious insituions: the importance of insitu

-ional features,Rosangela Cenci and Eliane Salete Filippim: the authors study how organizaions are challenged to adapt and constantly update their structures and insituional boundaries so they can fulill their purpose. In a context of pressure and loss of members in which religious insituions, paricularly the Catholic Church, are involved, this study seeks to understand what can moivate or demoivate people to join, remain or leave religious insituions related to the Catholic Church. Guided by elements of insituional theory, the study ana-lyzes the relaionship between the insituional structure of religious insituions (IR) and their members will to join, remain or leave the organizaions.
