REPORT OF THE AWARD COMMITTEE OF THE PAHO AWARD FOR ADMINISTRATION, 1988

The Award Committee of the PAHO Award for Administration, 1988, met on 27 June in the course of the 101st Meeting of the Executive Committee. After examining the documentation on the candidates nominated by five Member Governments, the Committee decided that the 1988 Award should be conferred on Dr. Guido Miranda Gutierrez, nominated by the Government of Costa Rica, for his outstanding contribution to administration and teaching in the areas of health and social security, which has had a considerable influence on the organization and administration of the health sector in Costa Rica and other countries of the Region.

Having heard the Report of the Award Committee (Document CE101/12, ADD. I,) annexed, the Executive Committee approved the following Resolution XIV:

THE 101st MEETING OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE,

Having examined the report of the Award Committee of the PAHO Award for Administration (Document CE101/12, ADD. I); and

Bearing in mind the provisions of the Procedure and Guidelines for conferring the PAHO Award for Administration as approved by the XVIII Pan American Sanitary Conference (1970) and amended by the XX Pan American Sanitary Conference (1978) and the XXVII Meeting of the Directing Council (1980),

RESOLVES:

1. To note the decision of the Award Committee to confer the PAHO Award for Administration, 1988, on Dr. Guido Miranda Gutierrez, of Costa Rica, for his outstanding contribution to administration and teaching in the areas of health and social security.

2. To transmit the report of the Award Committee of the PAHO Award for Administration (Document CE101/12, ADD. I) to the XXXIII Meeting of the Directing Council.

The Award will be presented to Dr. Guido Miranda Gutierrez in a ceremony to be held during the XXXIII Meeting of the Directing Council.

Report of the Award Committee

The Award Committee for the PAHO Award for Administration, 1988, consisted of Dr. Rodolfo Rodrfguez (Argentina), Dr. Jose Tohme Amador (Ecuador), and Mr. Cornelius L. Lubin (Saint Lucia). Dr. Luis C. Ochoa (PASB) served as Secretary.

The Award Committee met on 27 June and examined the background of the seven candidates nominated by five Member Governments, as follows:

The Award Committee wishes to accord special recognition to Dr. Hector Abad G6mez, the candidate nominated by Colombia, for his important contribution to public health and, mindful that he died in a hideous act of terrorism, express its repudiation of all forms of vio-lence, especially that directed at persons for political or ideological motives.

The Award Committee unanimously decided to grant the Award to Dr. Guido Miranda Gutierrez, of Costa Rica, for his outstanding contribu-tion to administracontribu-tion and teaching in the areas of health and social security, which has greatly influenced the organization and administra-tion of the health sector in Costa Rica and other countries in the Region.

The Award Committee proposes to the Executive Committee the following resolution:

Having examined the report of the Award Committee of the PAHO Award for Administration (Document CE101/12, ADD. I); and

Bearing in mind the provisions of the Procedure and Guidelines for confering the PAHO Award for Administration as approved by the XVIII Pan American Sanitary Conference (1970) and amended by the XX Pan American Sanitary Conference (1978) and the XXVII Meeting of the Directing Council

(1980),

RESOLVES:

1. To note the decision of the Award Committee to confer the PAHO Award for Administration, 1988, on Dr. Guido Miranda Gutierrez, of Costa Rica, for his outstanding contribution to administration and teaching in the areas of health and social security.
