We h y p o t h e s i z e that the p o s s i b l e d i f f i c u l t i e s the s t u d e n t s f a c e in l i s t e n i n g c o m p r e h e n s i o n t a s k s are c a u s e d by p h o n e t i c m i s i n t e r p r e t a t i o n , s y n t a c t i c c o m p l e x i t y , and la ck of s c h e m a t i c f r a m e w o r k . We a l s o e m p h a s i z e t h a t e-xposure to the l a n g u a g e h e l p s to d e v e l o p t h e aur al c a p a c i t y to understand it.

The s t u d y u n d e r t a k e n has p r o v e d t h a t s y n t a c t i c c o m p l e x i t y , lack of p h o n e t i c c o d i n g ’a b i1ity ,and u n f a m i l i a r l a n g u a g e items a f f e c t the p r o c e s s of l i s t e n i n g c o m p r e h e n s i o n a c t i v i t i e s .
T h e l i s t e n i n g c o m p r e h e n s i o n a b i l i t y has not y e t b e e n d e v e l o p e d as an i n d e p e n d e n t s k i l l . T e a c h e r s in ou r s c h o o l s h av e n o t t a u g h t l i s t e n i n g c o m p r e h e n s i o n e x p l i c i t l y t h r o u g h s y s t e m a t i c well p l a n n e d c l a s s r o o m a nd l a b o r a t o r y a c t i v i t i e s . I n n u m e r a b l e are the d i f f i c u l t i e s f e l t by the B r a z i l i a n s t u d e n t s w h e n f a c e d w i t h any k i n d of a c t i v i t y i n v o l v i n g an aural p a s s a g e . T h e y lack l i s t e n i n g c o m p e t e n c e and c a n n o t m a k e s e n s e of w h a t t h e y l i s t en . .To build:, a s c h e m e to p r o c e s s t he

T h i s can be d u e to t he f a c t t h a t the s t u d e n t s h a v e no t b e e n e x p o s e d long e n o u g h to v a r i o u s c o m m u n i c a t i v e s i t u a t i o n s to be a b l e to cope w i t h them. The p u r p o s e of this s t u d y is to e x a m i n e how f i r s t s e m e s t e r s t u d e n t s of the E n g l i s h P r o g r a m at the S c h o o l of L e t r a s d e v e l o p t h e i r a u d i t o r y a b i l i t y to c o m p r e h e n d s p o k e n E n g l i s h ; to d e t e c t the d i f f i c u l t i e s t h e y f i n d w i t h l i s t e n i n g c o m p r e h e n s i o n a c t i v i t i e s d e v e l o p e d in t he l a b o r a t o r y s e s s i o n s ; to o b s e r v e t h e i r m e m o r y c a p a c i t y to s t o r e i n f o r m a t i o n a n d the s t r a t e g i e s u s e d to a c h i e v e the v a r i o u s l e v e l s of l i s t e n i n g c o m p r e h e n s i o n . 01

She c a m e to the c o n c l u s i o n t ha t t h e r e was a l i t t l e d i f f e r e n c e b e t w e e n t h e s e g r o u p s for d i g i t c a p a c i t y . W h i l e the b e g i n n e r s had 5.9 c a p a c i t y for d i g i t s , the a d v a n c e d p r e s e n t e d a c a p a c i t y of 6.7; the d i f f e r e n c e b e t w e e n t he m w a s 0.8. She a l s o c a m e to t he c o n c l u s i o n t h a t the f o r e i g n a d u l t b e h a v e s like an a d u l t not l i k e a c h i l d as far as d i g i t is c o n c e r n e d . T h e f o r e i g n a d u l t has m o r e capacity than a ch i l d f o r d i g i t s . It was f o u n d t h a t t h e i r k n o w l e d g e of the l a n g u a g e was e l e m e n t a r y a c q u i r e d m o s t l y in h i gh s chool w h e r e the a i m of Eng 1 ish teaching is m a i n l y t r a n s l a t i o n . T h e n , an i n i t i a l t es t was g i v e n at the b e g i n n i n g of the c o u r s e in o r d e r to d e t e r m i n e the level o f c o m p r e h e n s i o n of the s p o k e n l a n g u a g e the s t u d e n t s had. D u r i n g the s e m e s t e r t h e s t u d e n t s a t t e n d e d two h o u r s of
l a b o r a t o r y s e s s i o n s p er w e e k in o r d e r to d e v e l o p t h e i r 1 istening s k i l l s . S i n c e it is t h o u g h t t h a t t h e r e a r e i n n a t e p e r c e p t u a l s t r a t e g i e s in e ac h i n d i v i d u a l t h a t h e l p to d e v e l o p l i s t e n i n g c o m p r e h e n s i o n s k i l l s , but m o s t ot the t i m e the i n d i v i d u a l is n o t c o n s c i o u s of t he m , a s h e e t of p a p e r w a s h a n d e d to t h e m t r y i n g to m a k e t h e m c o n s c i o u s of the d i f f i c u l t i e s and f a c i l i t i e s t h e y f a c e d in ea c h a c t i v i t y .
