II Brazilian Congress of Marine Biology

The current issue of the Brazilian Journal of Oceanography gathers full papers of studies presented at the 2nd Brazilian Congress of Marine Biology (2nd BCMB), hosted at the Hotel Atlântico Búzios Convention & Resort, Armação dos Búzios, Rio de Janeiro State, from 24th to 28th May, 2009. The event has been held by the Brazilian Association of Marine Biology, which organizes its congresses every two years.

The 2nd BCMB had the attendance of 1,450 delegates, who presented 597 studies as posters and 72 talk presentations. Twenty nine plenary lectures (six of them presented by invited international speakers) and five round-tables were presented in the event. Many other important activities were organized, such as the ABBM Award for Students (in two categories: undergraduate and graduate students), the photography contest, parallel scientific meetings, film exhibitions, and the special poster exhibition “Oceanos: Vida Escondida”, among others.

A key-activity of the 2nd BCMB was the publication of full papers presented at the Congress. This excellent alternative has only been possible due the fundamental support of the Brazilian Journal of Oceanography. The manuscripts were evaluated through the regular peer review process and the current issue consists in a representative summary of the research on Marine Biology in Brazil nowadays. The Brazilian Association of Marine Biology takes this opportunity to express its profound gratitude to the Brazilian Journal of Oceanography, which made a very important activity of the 2nd BCMB to be possible. Supporting the Congress, the

Brazilian Journal of Oceanography strengthened the event and reinforced its essential role to the development of Sea Sciences in Brazil.

The activities of the 2nd BCMB had the financial support of several sponsors, such as CNPq, CAPES, FAPERJ, Ministry of Science and Technology, Petrobras, Fundenor, Sinc, and Allmaxtec, as well as the contributions of two universities: UFF and UENF. In addition, the event was supported by the volunteer and enthusiastic work of several professionals and students. We thank all sponsors and volunteers for their contributions that made possible the accomplishment of the 2nd Brazilian Congress of Marine Biology.
