Bohemian neighborhood
Cidade Baixa is a neighborhood of contrasts. On the one hand it is where the past is more visible - as said by Moacyr Scliar - with a large concentration of historic houses, especially the door-and-window style, as on João Alfredo Street and Venezianos Lane. The peaceful atmosphere, and some residential streets as Lopo Gonçalves contrast with the neighborhood’s bustling nightlife. This is where there is the greatest concentration of bars, taverns, concert halls and theaters. If the plan is to enjoy the evening in a relaxed atmosphere, or alternatively, Cidade Baixa is the right place.
Parque Farroupilha
(Farroupilha Park)
The affectionate name Redenção, printed in the memories of the people of Porto Alegre comes from the old name given in 1884 - Campos da Redenção (Redemption Fields) - honoring the struggle for the liberty of slaves. Porto Alegre would have been the first city (together with Redenção in Ceará) to free slaves, 4 years before the Golden Law.
In 1930, the park receives a project by architect and urban planner Alfredo Agache, which brings unity to the area through a central axis and the design of gardens and nooks.

Travessa Venezianos (Venezianos Lane)
Travessa Venezianos (between Lopo Gonçalves St. and Joaquim Nabuco St.)
The gracious semi-detached houses from early 20th century are examples of the door-window style and keep the memories of workers villages, very common for the time being. The name of the place refers to the Sociedade Carnavalesca Venezianos (Venetian Carnival Society) settled in the area in early days of Carnival in Porto Alegre. It is said that it was named after the Italian city of Venice due to painful floods the area suffered.
Tip: Discover the stores settled in historic houses along the Lane.
