RESOLUTION

CD19.R24

FLUORIDATION OF PUBLIC WATER SUPPLIES

THE 19th DIRECTING COUNCIL,

Having considered the report on the fluoridation of public water supplies (Document CD19/21),1

submitted by the Director in accordance with Resolution X of the 61st Meeting of the Executive

Committee;

Considering that dental caries is an important health problem in all the Member Countries; and

Considering that the Twenty-Second World Health Assembly made a thorough analysis of this

problem and recommended2 to the Member States that they examine the possibility of introducing

the fluoridation of public water supplies where the fluoride intake from such sources is below

optimum levels,

RESOLVES

1. To take note of the report of the Director on the present status of fluoridation of public water

2. To take note of the recommendations of the Twenty-Second World Health Assembly on the

fluoridation of public water supplies.

3. To urge the national water authorities to take the necessary measures to introduce fluoridation of

public water supply systems where the fluoride intake from such sources is below optimum levels.

4. To recommend to the Director that he continue to promote the fluoridation program and, in

particular, the training of personnel in this field.
