The basisfor the matrix representation of the Coulomb potential must hen e be able to properlydes ribe produ ts of initial-stateand nal-state wavefun tions. So farmostpra ti alimplementations haveemployeda plane-wavebasissetin ombinationwithnorm- onservingpseudopotentials.Astheprodu toftwoplanewavesis againaplanewave, thisapproa hhastheadvantagethatprodu tsofwavefun tions aneasilybeexpressed in thesamebasisastheoriginal wavefun tions themselves.Inaddition, fast Fouriertransformationsmay be exploited, and the Coulomb matrix in re ipro al spa e is known analyti ally. For semi ondu tors, in parti ular, sophisti ated theoreti al al ulations of opti al absorption [5℄ and ele tron-energy-lossspe tra [6℄,whi h alsoin ludeex itoni ontributions, havebeenperformedinthis way. While the plane-wave pseudopotential approa h works well for sp-bonded semi ondu tors and simple metals, it be omes ine ient for transition metals and rare earths, where a largenumber of plane waves are needed to a urately des ribe the lo alized d or f orbitals. A similar problem o urs in oxides and other ompoundsinvolvingrst-rowelementsdue tothe hardpseudopotentialsthat only ontainminimal s reeningoftheioni orebytheinnermost1s ele trons. Therefore, thesematerialsarebeststudiedwithin an all-ele tron s heme that treats ore and valen e shells on an equal footing and already in orporates the rapid os illationsof the wavefun tions lose to thenu lei in thebasis fun tions themselves. Here we fo usonthefull-potentiallinearizedaugmented-plane-wave(FLAPW) method[7℄,whi hiswidelyusedfor ele troni -stru ture al ulationsof su h materials. It divides spa e into nonoverlappingmun-tin spheres entered at the atomi positions and into the interstitial region. Inside the mun-tin spheres the basis fun tions are onstru ted from numeri al solutions of the radial S hrödinger equation with xed energy parameters, whoseprodu tslieoutsidetheve torspa espannedbytheoriginalbasisfun tions. Therefore, produ tsoftheoriginalbasisfun tionsmayinsteadbeusedto onstru tamixedprodu tbasis[8℄,inwhi h thematrixelementsoftheCoulombpotentialwithinitialandnalstatesarethena uratelyrepresented. In the FLAPW method spa e is divided into nonoverlapping atom- entered mun-tin (MT) spheres and theinterstitial region(IR). The ore-ele tronwavefun tions, whi h are (mostly) onnedto theMT spheres, are dire tlyobtainedfromasolutionof thefully relativisti Dira equation. Thevalen e-ele tron wave fun tions with spin
