WELCOME TO ISCET, TO PORTO AND TO PORTUGAL Some short useful information

Accommodation:

We advise to lodge at Breyner House, located in Rua do Breyner, close to ISCET ( three minutes walk).

Breyner House has dinning-rooms, lounges, kitchen, laundry, bathrooms, showers, single and double rooms (in a total of 21). Price rooms range from 170 to 240 € per month.

We also recommend Porto Downtown Hostel, located at a 5min walking distance from ISCET. It’s located on downtown of porto city, and it has all the amenities nearby (metro, cab, bus, trainstation). It provides community rooms and double rooms, with bathroms, individual lockers, laundry room, mini-bar, towel serviçe and awking service. Each night costs around 17€/person. The night life in porto it’s varied and friendly and nerby the hostel. If you don’t have a accomodation reserved before coming to porto, we advise to book the first nights here.

Procedures

In order to assure rooms, a deposit of 150 € is required. In order to reserve rooms, each student must send a postal order of 150 € on the name of Cristiana Oliveira, as she will be the one to make the bookings.

The city of Porto:

The city of Porto which spreads along the right bank of the river Douro, also facing the Atlantic Ocean, one of the oldest European cities is located in the north-east of Portugal. One of the most significant features is its historic centre which was classified as World Heritage Site by UNESCO, in 1966.Though its conservative environment, Porto is also contemporary and artistic which can be seen not only in the streets, architecture and museums but also in the terraces, restaurants, leisure and shopping areas.

ISCET in the city of Porto:

ISCET is located in Rua de Cedofeita, one of the most ancient and typical shopping streets in the centre of the city, near the most important monuments, museums and lively night leisure quarters, full of art galleries and pubs.

The Region:

Porto is the city where Port Wine cellars are located, a city close to the Douro wine growing area (DouroValley was classified as World Heritage Site by UNESCO) and to Minho ( an area rich in folk music and handicraft) which is about 150 Kilometers far from the northern province of Galicia, in Spain.

Transport

STCP (Porto Public Bus Service):

- Ticket return – 1,60 €; 10 trips 6,30 €. On the bus, each trip costs 1,30 € - Metro(Underground) - 0,50 € a trip. Advisable to buy a special card

“Andante”.

Tourism Office

The Tourism Office in Porto is located in the city centre, close to the Town Hall. Tourists or visitors may get all type of information concerning monuments, museums, etc.

Shopping Areas

Main shopping streets in Porto:

- Rua de Cedofeita (where ISCET is located) - Rua de Santa Catarina

- Rua Miguel Bombarda - Avenida da Boavista Shopping centres :

• Península and Cidade do Porto in the area of Boavista;

• Arrábida Shopping and El Corte Inglês in Gaia (a neighbouring city just across the river);

• Norte Shopping in Matosinhos and Mar Shopping in Leça, (two neighbouring cities);

• Via Catarina, in the centre of the city. Leisure/ entertainment

In Porto do not miss the city centre, full of night life, Ribeira (by the river) with typical restaurants and pubs, Foz ( an elegant area by the Atlantic Ocean),and the Port Wine Lodges, just across the river.

Climate

The climate in Portugal varies considerably from north to south and from coast to mountain. In the south, the weather is particularly mild in Winters and hot and dry in Summers. In the north, due to the influence of the Gulf Stream, Autumns are mild with temperatures varying between 12º and 25º C. The weather in Winter is rainy, humid and temperatures range from 1º to 9º C. Springs are mild, though rainy sometimes and Summers are warm and sunny most of the days. Cost of living

For those who intend to live in Porto, here are some additional information about the cost of living:

Water (5 litre bottle): 0,60 cents to 1.00 € Rice: 0,95 cents to 1.20 €

Milk : 0,65 cents Bread: 0,10 cents

Potatoes: 0,30 cents (Kilo)
