TheeditorialontheagingpatternofBrazil’spopula-tion,1indicatingthattheagingofourpopulationisafast,
irreversible and progressive phenomenon, was very op- portune.Therealimpactofthisaging,especiallythepro-portionalincreaseinthenumberofveryoldpeople(more than80yearsold)willbefeltoverthenextfewdecades. Thiswillbeduebothtothechangesindependenceandthe consequentialproblemsofthisforsocialsecurity,andtothe changesintheprofileofhealthcareevents.Therewillbe concomitantmultiplicationofhigh-complexityeventsand accidentalevents,suchashipfractures,withhighmaterial andhumancosts.
Itisindispensablethatgovernment,societyanduniversi-tiesshouldquicklybegintomakepreparationsforfacingupto thischallenge.Programslikethevaccinationcampaignsagainst influenzaandtheStatuteoftheElderlyareevidentachievements. However,whatismoreimportantthandeclaringrightsisto ensurethattheyarefulfilled.
We hope that this lucid editorial in São Paulo Medical Journalcanserveasafurther,verynecessarycryofalertabout theproblematicsituationofelderlypeopleinBrazil.
