4.1. Domain of specialization
• Wine quality control / Wine authenticity / Wine food safety
• Mineral composition of grape and wine, with special regard to trace and ultra-trace elements
• Heavy metals in soil-wine system. Origin, contamination sources, evolution throughout technological processes, levels of occurrence.
• Inorganic and isotopic analysis, namely by ETAAS and ICP-MS techniques.
4.2. Current research interests
• Rare earth elements patterns and strontium isotopic ratio (
87Sr/
86Sr) as fingerprints of wine geographical origin/terroir.
• Wine tartaric stabilization.
• Trace chemical species with influence on wine quality
5. PARTICIPATION IN R&D PROJECTS As responsible/independent investigator:
• FCT PTDC/AGR-ALI/64655/2006, Multi-elemental composition and isotope ratios as fingerprints of wine geographic origin (2009-2013). Institutions: INIAV (principal contractor), ISA/UTL (CEF and UIQA), Companhia Agrícola do Sanguinhal, José Maria da Fonseca Vinhos, Sogrape Vinhos.
Overall objective: to evaluate the suitability of multi-elemental composition, including rare earth elements (REE) patterns and

86Sr ratio with a view to their use as markers of geographic origin of wines (and terroir characterization).

Responsible for the installation and start-up of a Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (GFAAS) and development of analytical methods for heavy metals determination in wine.
