NONGOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS IN OFFICIAL RELATIONS WITH PAHO

1. According to the Principles Governing Relations between the Pan American Health Organization and Nongovernmental Organizations, “The Executive Committee of PAHO will appoint three Members to the Standing Committee on Nongovernmental Organizations, whose terms will expire simultaneously with the expiration of their terms on the Executive Committee.”

2. The present members of the Standing Committee are Barbados, Peru, and the United States of America.

Review of the Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs) in Official Relations with PAHO

3. Paragraph 5 of the Principles Governing Relations between the Pan American Health Organization and Nongovernmental Organizations states that “The Standing Committee will normally review collaboration with each NGO with which PAHO has official working relations every four years and, based on the results of the biennial work plans and activities undertaken during the period under review and on the proposed work plan for the next four-year period, shall make a recommendation to the Executive Committee on the desirability of maintaining these relations.”

4. There are 17 NGOs in official relations with PAHO.

reviewed at the next meeting of the Standing Committee on NGOs in 2004.” The Standing Committee will review the following NGOs at its meeting in June and recommend to the Executive Committee, in each case, the continuation or not of official relations:

• International Organization of Consumers Unions (CI-ROLAC),

• Pan American Union for the Control of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (UPACITS, ex-ULACETS),

• Inter-American College of Radiology (ICR),

• Latin American Association of Pharmaceutical Industries (ALIFAR),

• Latin American Federation of Hospitals (FLH),

• Pan American Federation of Associations of Medical Schools (FEPAFEM),

• Pan American Federation of Nursing Professionals (FEPPEN).

Applications Received

6. Paragraph 4.3 of the Principles states that during the June session of the Executive Committee, the Standing Committee will consider applications submitted by NGOs (in accordance with the criteria established in the Principles) and will make recommendations thereon to the Executive Committee.

7. Documentation was completed by the Latin American and Caribbean Women’s Health Network (LACWHN) by 31 January 2004—the deadline for applications to be considered in 2004.

8. The Executive Committee, after considering the recommendations for the Standing Committee, will take a decision on the admission into official working relation with PAHO of each of these NGOs.
