(31) ASSEMBLY NOTES. READ THIS MANUAL THOROUGHLY BEFORE BEGINNING CONSTRUCTION OF THE ANTENNA. If possible, read it twice. This will allow you to understand the flow of what needs to be accomplished, greatly reducing the potential for error.. NOTES: A large, cleared flat area is recommended for assembly of an antenna of this size and complexity. Typically, an area 40 ft x 25 ft would be ideal. We recommend using sawhorses or sturdy tables when installing the boom. By having the boom elevated, it is easier to ensure that the elements are level. Rubber or Nitrile gloves are recommended when applying the anti-seize to the stainless steel fasteners or the aluminum boom sections. If you do not have room near the tower to assemble the antenna, we suggest you find a place that you can put the antenna together in it’s entirety and then disassemble as needed for transportation to the tower area. Use of a level for adjusting the Element Housing Units (EHU’s) is highly recommended. This is a surprisingly accurate and consistent method. Simply place the level on the mast plate, and adjust each element accordingly. Be sure to use the anti-seize compound supplied to prevent the galling of the stainless steel fasteners. There is one exception to this - do NOT use the anti-seize compound when connecting the plastic sweeps coupler to the pole ends. This will be covered in more detail later in the manual.. 2112 116TH AVE NE SUITE 1-5, BELLEVUE WA, 98004 WWW.STEPPIR.COM TEL: (425)-453-1910 FAX: (425)-462-4415. 10.

(32) BOOM ASSEMBLY. NOTES: Our boom pieces are all drilled on a very precise drill press. This ensures that all the bolts are snug when assembled. If your boom ever gets damaged or destroyed we can now send the specific replacement boom required. Apply lubricant to stainless steel bolts that are using stainless steel nuts. This will prevent the two from galling together. Each bolt has a specific length for the respective tubing it will be securing. It is critical that only the shank of the bolt is engaged in the aluminum tubing. Use 5 Washer per bolt, as shown in figure 2.. Apply a thin film of anti-seize to the male engagement area of the boom sections. Slide the boom pieces together until the pre-drilled holes align. Align the center boom splice 10-1203-01 so the it will allow the Eye bolt to fit as shown in figure 1 and figure 3. Secure the correct 1/4” bolts and Washer onto the boom as shown in figure 2 Repeat this for each section until the boom is completely assembled. Secure the eyebolt as shown in figure 1 and figure 2 Figure 3 and figure 3A shows how the section of boom that has the EZ--Eye on it differs from the rest of the boom by using a 5/16” bolt in place of a 1/4” bolt.. (52) MAST PLATE ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE Mount the mast plate to the boom, ensuring that the fully threaded bolt is centered on the EZ-Eye bolt that is mounted on the boom as shown in figure 5. When finished, mount the tower mast to the mast plate as shown in figure 6A. While we show you how to do this step here, we recommend you wait until the antenna is fully assembled to mount the DB18/18E Yagi to the mast. Secure one half of the 2” saddle to the mast plate using the included #10 x 5/8” pan head machine screw. This will align the tower mast to the mast plate. Once the antenna is in place, secure the other half of the saddles around the tower mast using the 5/16” x 3.75” hex head bolts and Nylock nuts.. Mast Plate and EZ- Eye Assembly. Figure 5. (53) With the Mast plate loosely attached to the boom and secured in the EZ- Eye, follow Figure 6 for final assembled mast plate. A good location for mounting the terminal housing or Connector box is between the two pairs of saddles in the middle of the mast plate. If you ordered the Connector box it should be mounted at this time. If not then you will have the terminal housing and it can be mounted at a later time described later in this manual.. Figure 6. Mast to Mast plate Assembly NOTES: At this time if you have the connector box option mount it on the saddles as shown in the connector box manual. Adjusting the EZ--Eye is not critical at this point. This will be done once the antenna has been completely assembled. The Mast plate should be perpendicular to the element poles upon completion of antenna.. tor ec l f Re 2”. m Ele. om. t en. cti. QTY 1 QTY 1. 72-0038-01 DB 18 Driven Hardware kit DB18 ONLY 72-0039-01 DB 18 E Driven Hardware Kit DB18E ONLY. NOTES: Spacing of the element in relationship to each other is very critical. Take great care in making sure the elements are mounted as shown in Figure 4. All dimensions are taken from the center of the element. This point is at the center of the fiberglass tube in both the EHU or Return EST. With the boom completely assembled, use a marker and a tape measure to mark where the center of the elements will be. These marks will act as a guide for element placement while assembling the antenna. Take note in the orientation of the housings and how they are facing in comparison to the boom. Housing orientation is the same for both the DB 18 and DB 18 E. The only difference in the two antennas is the DRV housing will be a 20m housing for the DB 18. Where as it will be a 30m/40m housing on the DB 18 E. Refer to Figure 3 for housing orientation.. To make it easier to use a tape measure the distance from the center of the element to the closest edge on the element housing unit mounting plate = 3.87”. The far side of the mounting plate to the center of the element = 10.13”. This will allow you to have a good edge to ` hold the tape measure. Just simply add the 3.87 or 10.13” to the correct distance during the layout. For example the element centers of the REF and DIR are suppose to be 30” from the return tube center. Pull the tape measure from the short edge of the EHU mounting plate to the center of the return tube and it should be 33.87”. For the Driven EHU you will need to use the 10.13” because the housing is in a different orientation. This is just a method if you do not have anyone to hold a tape measure. The dimensions in Figure 4 are the correct numbers and should be used as the key.. 2112 116TH AVE NE SUITE 1-5, BELLEVUE WA, 98004 WWW.STEPPIR.COM TEL: (425)-453-1910 FAX: (425)-462-4415. 16.

(61) NOTES: For both the DB 18 and DB 18 E the Reflector and Director elements are exactly the same. For assembly purposes these two elements can be interchanged. Both elements have been fitted with a relay that is capable of connecting or disconnecting the balun-unun that turns the element from a driven to a passive. This is done automatically with the software in the controller via the antenna switch that is provided and will be mounted on the boom. The Driven element is the only difference from the DB 18 and the DB 18 E. In the case of the DB 18 the Driven element will be a 20m capable housing. For the DB 18 E the driven will be 30m/40m capable housing. Note the different assembly procedures for the correct antenna that was purchased..

(98) EHU ASSEMBLY Follow the directions below for wiring each of your element housing units (EHU) from the respective EHU to either the terminal housing, or the connector junction box, if you have purchased this option. NOTE: This assembly sheet only shows you the correct way to assembly and wire the EHU to the boom. It DOES NOT take into account the orientation of the EHU on the boom. Follow figure 1 for wiring and routing cable in the wire tray on the lip of the EHU. Depending on EHU type there will be 4 conductor or 6 conductor wire. Follow the wiring code that is printed on the circuit board inside the EHU as shown in note A. Be sure to unplug the top portion of the connector when wiring, as you cannot see the correct wiring code until the upper plug is removed. The correct wiring code is printed closest to the terminal block and reads left to right: Bk, R ,G, W, Blu, Br. For 4 wires use Bk, R, G, W and ignore Blu & Br. For 6 wires use: Bk, R, G, W, Blu, Br. Trim the shield wire so that it is not exposed inside the EHU.. Wiring EHU. Figure 1 NOTE:. Wire the cable to the correct terminal on the wiring connector board. Follow the color code on the circuit board as shown in figure 1A. Route the wire into the wire tray. Place a .25” piece of the provided coax-seal over the cable and form it so that its flush with the wire tray. Do this in the 3 locations shown below. (This will keep the cable in place and prevent water from leaking into the EHU.). Fig. 1 Wire tray Reel. Fig 1A. Use this line for wiring. For 4 wire connections the wiring order is: BK, R, G, W. Location is not that important, as long as all element control cables can reach and the control wire from your shack will reach. We recommend mounting it as close to the mast plate as possible. Unscrew the SS hose clamp 056 (60-6000-40) so that it can be fitted around the boom. Use the SS hose clamp to secure the terminal housing to the boom or mast. The housing can be horizontal or vertical. Regardless of the mounting orientation make sure that the hole in the end cap of the terminal housing will be facing down when you attach it. This it to allow the housing to drain and prevent water form collecting in the housing. DO NOT SEAL THE TERMINAL HOUSING IT NEEDS TO BREATH OUT THE BOTTOM DRAIN HOLE Figure 15. Terminal Housing Assembly. NOTES: With the hose clamp unscrewed, it can be fitted around the boom and secure the terminal housing to the boom.. Location for SS hose clamp. Make sure upon completion that the drain hole in the terminal housing cap is facing down to allow for water to escape the terminal housing. If the boom truss option is installed on the DB 18 or DB 18E the terminal housing can be mounted on the boom mast.. BE LL ON I T W TI E. (107) SECURING THE COAX AND ELEMENT CONTROL CABLE TO THE BOOM NOTES: Make sure not to bend any control cable over any sharp corners. This could result in damage that causes a short circuit. Also do not clamp anything over the cables that could possibly pinch or damage the cable. When taping the cable start on the ends of the boom and work towards the mast plate. This will allow you to trim the cable to the exact length if desired. We recommend labeling all the wires at the Terminal Housing location. This will help with determining what wire is going to what EHU. Also if any rewiring is needed or to prevent from tracing wires across the entire length of the boom. Secure the cables from the elements to the boom. (both Coax and control cables) Use the electrical tape (09-0001) to secure the cable to the boom Only two wraps of the tape are needed to hold the cable to the boom. Tape the control cable and Coax cable to the boom approximately every two feet. Once both cables have been to the terminal housing or connector box it can either be trimmed to length or coiled up and out of the way. (the Coax cable does not need to be trimmed) Wiring up the cable will be done in the next step.. 2112 116TH AVE NE SUITE 1-5, BELLEVUE WA, 98004 WWW.STEPPIR.COM TEL: (425)-453-1910 FAX: (425)-462-4415. 27.

(108) WIRING THE EHU’S TO THE TERMINAL STRIPS Locate pieces for wiring the DB 18 and DB 18 E QTY 1 Terminal Housing Enclosure already mounted to the boom close to the Mast plate Locate the following kits for wiring the DB 18 or DB 18 E QTY 1 72-0022-01 Terminal Housing kit NOTES: If you have purchased the connector box option you will need to use the provided manual that was included with the connector box option. It will have instructions for mounting and wiring the connector box option. Ensure all of the control cables are taped and secured to the boom. If you have purchased the connector box option refer to the connector box manual for correct wiring. Apply a thin coat of connector protector to the exposed wires. Follow Figure 16 for correct wiring. Also note that the shield wires are all connected together and use a single position terminal strip that is provided. Be careful not to over tighten the screws on the terminal blocks. Perform all tests on the antenna, then complete the following procedure. The next couple steps will be the last thing done before the antenna is put on the tower. Once all the control cables from the EHU’s and control cable are correctly wired, fit the terminal strip into the terminal housing that has been mounted close to the mast plate. Make a couple of wraps of electrical tape around the control cable bundle where it will pass through the notch in the threaded plug. This will help to protect the cable sheath from the threads in the tube. Guide the control cable into the drain hole on the black screw on cap. Tighten the cap onto the terminal housing, CAUTION Be careful not to cut or damage the control cable as you tighten the terminal housing cap.. PRELIMINARY WIRING AND MECHANICAL EHU TESTING Refer to the SDA 100 manual page 11 for conducting the preliminary testing for the EHU’s NOTES: This test is to insure that the wiring of the EHU’s has been done correctly. It is critical that the wiring be done exactly how the wiring diagram shown. Incorrect wiring can cause poor per-formance and even damage to the antenna or antenna controller. Once all the EHU’s are correctly wired and the controller is correctly controlling the antenna then the preliminary tests are complete. Other tests will be conducted to insure that the relays are working correctly inside the EHU’s and also inside the Coax Antenna Switch. These tests will be done once the telescoping poles and sweeps have been assembled.. 2112 116TH AVE NE SUITE 1-5, BELLEVUE WA, 98004 WWW.STEPPIR.COM TEL: (425)-453-1910 FAX: (425)-462-4415. 28.

By utilizing this connector splice, there is no need to cut the DB25 connector off and re-solder when running cable through conduit. In addition, now you can purchase custom cable lengths to within 1 foot of your desired length, eliminating potential for excess cable. To install the DB25 control cable splice, follow these instructions:

If you are having trouble extending the telescoping pole to the proper length, try collapsing the entire pole and reextend it using more force than the first time. The telescoping poles will vary in size but should never be shorter than 17 feet 8 inches, longer is OK. Refer to the following pages for preparation and installation of the telescoping poles and 40/30 loops..
