O presente estudo traduziu-se nas seguintes conclusões:
- A citologia obtida por PAAF é um procedimento clínico rápido, de fácil execução, pouco dispendioso, não invasivo e que não requer equipamentos sofisticados;
- Os testes de validação diagnóstica da citologia demonstraram elevados valores de sensibilidade e especificidade quando não considerados os diagnósticos inconclusivos, pelo que os resultados são considerados bastante fiáveis, podendo o exame citológico ser amplamente utilizado como meio de diagnóstico na distinção entre neoplasias mamárias benignas e malignas de cadela;
- O presente estudo teve várias limitações, nomeadamente a pequena dimensão da amostra populacional (uma vez que incidiu num período de tempo limitado correspondente ao estágio curricular de final de curso, com uma duração de seis meses) e o número de amostras não diagnosticadas terem influenciado os resultados. Importa referir, por isso, que o sucesso da técnica depende dos cuidados durante e após o procedimento, nomeadamente o acondicionamento das amostras em transportadores apropriados, afastados de locais com possíveis vapores de formol.
- A PAAF possibilita um diagnóstico rápido, mas que não deve ser entendido como definitivo, uma vez que não substitui o exame histopatológico; A histopatologia continua a ser a técnica padrão para o diagnóstico definitivo de neoformações mamárias. São por isso técnicas que se complementam, sendo essenciais no diagnóstico de neoplasias em Medicina Veterinária.
