Uma lectina específica para manose e N-acetil-D-glicosamina foi purificada a partir das sementes de Andira surinamensis. A ASL mostrou-se estável quando submetida a uma ampla faixa de temperatura e pH, mas teve sua hemaglutinante comprometida quando na presença de agente quelante. O espectro de massa intacta da ASL mostrou a presença de dois íons majoritários de massa molecular de 12.220+ 2 e 13.258 + 2 Da. ASL interferiu no crescimento planctônico de duas diferentes cepas bacterianas gram-positivas (Streptococcus mitis e Streptococcus salivarius) e na formação de biofilme por Staphylococcus aureus e Streptococcus salivarius.

Com a execução do presente trabalho, novas informações são somadas ao estudo de lectinas da tribo Dalbergieae. Este estudo também reforça a importância das interações lectina-carboibratos e seu potencial como ferramenta biotecnológica. Experimentos adicionais são necessários para a determinação da sequência primária completa e para a elucidação dos mecanismos moleculares específicos responsáveis pela interferência da ASL no crescimento planctônico bacteriano e na formação de biofilmes
